Provocations and asymmetric threats, the next “card” played by Turkey

Ankara is now resorting to multi-faceted propaganda and asymmetric threats despite the wall of condemnation of its behavior from the West, as it tries to find new ways to get out of its internal impasses, which plague Turkish society and undermine the once omnipotence of Tayyip Erdogan .

After the barrage of Turkish threats and provocations in recent days with Tayyip Erdogan even threatening an invasion, provocations took over. Taking advantage of the borders in Evros once again, the Turks attempted to set up another suspicious incident with a false Turkish NOTAM for the alleged presence of immigrants on an islet in Evros.

As the Minister of Civil Protection Takis Theodorikakos announced – there was a Turkish NOTAM in Kapitan Andreevo, with which Turkey showed that there are illegal immigrants on an island with coordinates belonging to Greek territory, requesting an investigation operation by the Greek authorities. The police carried out a search and rescue operation and found that there is no migrant there.

Circles of the Ministry of Citizen Protection said that “we are probably facing Turkey’s well-known tactics, which, as usual, are based on the desperation of unhappy people.”

“Since the first moment, an immediate and extensive operation by the Police has been underway, carried out within the framework of the ‘Akritas’ project: We respond to asymmetric threats by protecting our sovereign rights. We respond to provocation by applying International Law. We respond to the instrumentalization of human suffering with respect for human life” they concluded.

Government sources commented that the Turkish leadership throughout the next period and until the Turkish elections – whenever they take place – will raise and lower the intensity of the challenges, pulling out of its drawers every provocative and propaganda method available in order to possibly blackmail situations abroad, but primarily to overshadow the enormous internal pathologies and disorient the Turkish public.

Greece, the same sources clarified, is still adamant about its sovereign rights and national justice, and is watching with great care and calmness what is happening and the persistent distortion effort on the part of Turkey, which, however, as appreciated by Athens as well as from our partners is a dead end.

Greek diplomacy, in any case, continues to deconstruct the non-existent and ahistorical arguments of Turkey, presenting in contrast the role of stability and peace that Greece plays in the Aegean and the Eastern Mediterranean.

In this climate, the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Nikos Dendias, before the former president of the French Republic, Francois Hollande, and other former European officials, in the greeting he addressed to the 2nd Metropolitan Summit of the Economist, which is being held in Thessaloniki, once again exposed the Turkish provocation, declaring for one more time that the Greek people are not afraid of her.

“In the last few days, we have been experiencing a huge aggravation towards Greece and an incredible and indescribable qualitative upgrade that constitutes a direct threat to the territorial integrity, not to mention the very existence of our country”, stressed the Greek Minister of Foreign Affairs, noting at the same time that “no we had never heard anyone question the Greekness of the Aegean islands. And you will allow me to say what I also said in parliament, our country, our people, our society do not shy away from these threats, we reject them and call on our allies, friends and members of the European family to understand the magnitude of the challenge which our country is facing” he said.

Addressing Mr. Hollande, the Foreign Minister said that “the ties between France and Greece are ties of centuries” and “we do not forget the help you offered us”.

At the same time, he emphasized that “Greece relies on French aid, Greece relies on the strategic relationship and alliance it has with the French Republic. And I want to say clearly to every recipient that our response to the challenges we face is a response of a modern strong European Republic, a response that rejects revisionism from wherever it comes from, a response that despises neo-Ottoman concepts and practices and looks forward to a common European future with unity and solidarity”.
