The police have no business at the University” said Ms. Notopoulou and Mr. Papaioannou replied: “I apply the law. I am institutional and all the rest will be seen by you who are politicians, I am rector. Whatever operational matter you have addressed to the Greek Police, not to me.”
Shortly before leaving the specific stand, the president of SYRIZA also visited the stand of the Educational Foundation of the Union of Daily Newspaper Editors – Thrace (ESHEM-TH).

Meeting with the strikers of “Malamatina”
Before his tour of the 86th TIF, the president of SYRIZA – Progressive Alliance went to the factory of the “Malamatina” company in Kalochori and met with the strikers.
Mr. Tsipras expressed his undivided support for their fight, emphasizing at the same time that their fight is the fight of all the workers in the country.
In the conversation he had with the strikers, he described the Hatzidakis law as an “extremism” and pledged to repeal it because, as he said, “this will be the future if we leave this extremism and put it into practice.”
“The company went into a restructuring plan where the Greek taxpayers paid the insurance contributions and part of the debt and now they are telling you 15 redundancies and individual contracts. Let’s tell the truth, respecting the Hatzidakis law,” said Mr. Tsipras.
He emphasized that the “Malamatina” strikers are fighting a battle on the front line and not only have the undivided support of the official opposition but also of “every democratic citizen and every worker who looks anxiously at the future of the uncertainty that you have and in his own future” . He noted that he wants to encourage the effort they make with their fight and emphasized that those who make the decisions should know that it will not be easy to have both the whole pie and the dog full. “Without workers, no business can move forward. This logic of shrinking labor rights and wages and increasing profitability is a logic that will bring both business and the economy to a standstill.”
The president of the “Malamatina” workers’ union, Yannis Frangidis, said that the strikers demand the observance of the legality and of what has been agreed with the company. As he reported, the workers backed the company’s consolidation plan with a 20% cut in their salary, to salaries that reach 900 and 1200 euros after 30 years of work.
“We abide by the court decision of the plan and the administration abides by the Hatzidakis law,” the president of the union pointed out.
The strikers presented Mr. Tsipras with a t-shirt that reads: “MalaMATina Strikers – One Voice One Fist” and explained the symbolism of the 3 black letters (MAT), with which they said they wanted to demonstrate their protest against the heavy police presence which they are facing in the last two months of the strike.
