The strategy of the parties after TIF

The two main gladiators, New Democracy and SYRIZA, have largely opened their cards. In which line are the other “players” moving

And now it’s time for the polls. The parties presented their programs in Thessaloniki, “talked” to the citizens and the countdown to the spring election has begun.

The two main gladiators, New Democracy and SYRIZA they have largely opened their cards. The increase in mobilization that will put a brake on movements from one party to another is requested. They will now seek votes among the undecided, at PASOKbut also in the “tanks” from the center right and left respectively.

The ruling party starts with three constants: he will not surprise with early polls, he will not change the electoral law and the government scheme will remain as it is. At Maximou, they are well aware that the conflict with PASOK has been added to the confrontation with Koumoundourou. The maintenance of the anti-SYRIZA front is considered necessary in order to stay close to the current majority, a large part of voters in the middle ground who do not want to have anything to do with Koumoundourou. Except that things cannot be completely predictable since Herodos Atticus has to deal with a very difficult winter. The prime minister’s choice not to run the political developments was, by all accounts, a high-risk move. If in the autumn they manage to keep the gap with the official opposition above seven to eight units, they estimate that they will have a very important lead for the final victory. The guide will be the simple proportional ballot box where a good margin will pave the way for self-reliance for the second election. Regarding the announcements from TIF, the messages received by Maximou are positive. What Kyriakos Mitsotakis is most interested in is to continue to have great influence among centrist voters.

SYRIZA moves with the strategy of the first ballot and to the dilemma raised by the prime minister about monstrosity, Alexis Tsipras responded with “progressive governance”. In Koumoundourou they want to create a “victory” environment for the party by exorcising the defeat in the elections or scenarios that talk about returning to Maximou as a second party. “We do not claim to be a government of losers”, stressed Alexis Tsipras at the press conference at TIF. It is a fact that in the next period they will try at every opportunity to widen the gap that separates New Democracy and PASOK. “Aggressor and victim cannot rule together” said Alexis Tsipras in response to an earlier reference by the prime minister that “you vote for Androulakis and you get Tsipras”.

On the line “neither New Democracy nor SYRIZA” remains o Nikos Androulakis with PASOK vehemently attacking Alexis Tsipras after his appearance at the TIF, speaking of “delusions of the Thessaloniki program”. The official opposition leader may have appeared confident that if the first party emerges, a progressive government will be formed, but it seems that he is counting without the main “hotelier” that is PASOK. What the head of Harilaou Trikoupi made clear from the co-capital – where he was last week – is that the people will give the answers at the polls for the governance model, but also for the protagonists of the post-election period. He asked for a strong mandate from the first Sunday, and the party is optimistic that the surveillance case (he filed a supplementary subpoena) and the opening to new ages will bear poll results. They already see a small decline that appeared at the beginning of the summer that it no longer exists, while they estimate that they have gained more space in the opposition which is bothering SYRIZA.

The fourth “player” is Yanis Varoufakis. He is not negative in the perspective of progressive governance, but he sets a condition, apparently to SYRIZA: the programmatic convergence to be discussed before the polls and not when the party of Alexis Tsipras gets the three-day exploratory mandate. The head of MeRA25 is making it difficult for his former president, as it would be “butter to the government’s bread” if the two find themselves in the same frame discussing the terms of a possible collaboration. New Democracy will talk about a repeat of 2015 in an attempt to evoke negative memories in many centrist voters.
