“We’re surprised you don’t see the elephant in the room!” said the president of PASOK to the Secretary General. of NATO
The policy of equal distances adopted by Jens Stoltenberg against the Turkish provocations condemned the Nikos Androulakis, calling him “Pontius Pilate” during his speech at the Socialist Group meeting with the NATO Secretary as an invitee.
The president of PASOK contrasted the clear Greek stance of support for Ukraine against Mr. Stoltenberg’s keeping an even distance to Ankara’s provocations.
“If we let authoritarian revisionist leaders violate international law, then we are headed for catastrophic irreversible situations, as you said in your prologue. And we totally agree. We took a clear stand against Putin’s illegal invasion of Ukraine and supported the Ukrainian people in practice by sending aid. But there is one country in the NATO alliance that has not imposed sanctions on Russia, taking a controversial stance. That country is Turkey and indeed its President imitates Putin’s revisionism and authoritarianism” noted the president of PASOK.
As he mentioned, “Erdogan often speaks against the Treaty of Lausanne and even goes so far as to directly question our national sovereignty. It violates the resolutions of the United Nations Security Council in Cyprus with the recent example of the illegal activities in Varosia. While posing as a human rights defender at the United Nations, he undermines the rule of law by victimizing thousands of citizens inside his own country. Every day we have a harsh declaration of a bellicose nature against Greece. We are surprised that you don’t see the elephant in the room!’
“Many times your statements ring in the ears of the Greek people as the statements of Pontius Pilate. One last thing. You say that it is necessary for European states to invest more in armaments programs to strengthen their defense against external threats. In Greece, although we have gone through a very big economic crisis and it is necessary to invest in the welfare state and in infrastructure to tackle inequalities and chart a new development path, we have signed very large armament programs to strengthen our deterrent power. And yet, we have not seen your practical solidarity or similar initiatives, which would respond to the escalating Turkish provocation against Greece” concluded Nikos Androulakis.
