Alexis Tsipras met in Brussels with the Vice-President of the European Commission for Values and Transparency, Viera Jourova, and with the President of the Social Freedoms, Justice and Home Affairs Committee of the European Parliament, Juan Fernando López Aguilar.

Its President SYRIZA-PS, Alexis Tsipras had a meeting on Brussels with the Vice-President of the European Commission for Values and Transparency, Vera Jourova, as well as with the President of the Social Freedoms, Justice and Home Affairs Committee of the European Parliament, Juan Fernando Lopez Aguilar.

“I had the opportunity to express to them my strong concern for the blows that the rule of law has received in Greece, blows that endanger democracy itself in our country, for the great surveillance scandal and the twin scandal of covering up the truth and the responsibilities for the monitoring of politicians and journalists, the issue of the lack of pluralism in the mass media, as well as the issue of the undermining and instrumentalization of justice which has created a big gap of trust between citizens and the institution of justice in our country” he stressed Mr. Tsipras in his statement to journalists after the meeting with Ms. Yourova.

He added that “this concern for the developments in our country is shared here in Europe, they follow what is happening, because the protection of the rule of law is not, as you know, only an internal matter, but is a pillar of common European values and the European acquis”.

In particular, the President of SYRIZA-PS stated:

“Today I met the President of the European Parliament’s Committee on Freedoms and Justice, as well as the Vice-President of the European Commission on Values and Transparency. And I had the opportunity to express to them my strong concern about the blows that the rule of law has received in Greece, blows that endanger democracy itself in our country, about the great surveillance scandal and the twin scandal of covering up the truth and the responsibilities for the monitoring of politicians and journalists, the issue of the lack of pluralism in the mass media as well as the issue of the undermining and instrumentalization of justice which has created a great gap of trust between citizens and the institution of justice in our country.

I can say that this concern about the developments in our country is shared here in Europe, they follow what is happening, because the protection of the rule of law is not, as you know, only an internal matter, but is a pillar of common European values and the European acquis.

As far as we are concerned we will do everything possible to let the truth shine through and protect democracy and the rule of law in the country. And where there is no possibility for this to become possible within the country, we will claim it by utilizing the European institutions and every possibility so that the truth shines and democracy is restored”.
