Tsipras: Against Turkish aggression, statements are not enough – Decisions and actions are needed

The President of SYRIZA-PS, Alexis Tsiprasmet today the candidate for the Presidential elections in the Republic of Cyprus, Andreas Mavroyiannis, emphasizing the importance of his progressive candidacy supported by AKEL. He informed Mr. Mavroyiannis about the contacts he made at the pre-convention of the Eurosocialists and with the High Representative of the EU, Mr. Borel, stressing, among other things, that “against the Turkish aggression declarations are not enough. Well said, but decisions and actions are needed. As long as in the EU we do not claim and therefore a package of strong sanctions against Turkey is not decided if it violates the sovereign rights of Greece, so the Turkish President will cause undisturbed».

He also underlined that, especially in view of the Turkish elections, “the message must be given to Turkey that there is a prospect for a new Euro-Turkish relationship, but also for positive steps in its accession path, if it chooses the path of peace, the defense of human rights and diplomacy based on international law. And this road does not go through unacceptable dichotomous solutions, but through the fair and sustainable solution of the Cyprus problem on the basis of the UN Decisions, without guarantees and occupying troops”. In this context he supported once again bizonal, bicommunal federation solution with political equalityfor the benefit of the entire Cypriot people, Greek Cypriots and Turkish Cypriots.

Finally, he added, that the progressive forces in Greece, Cyprus and Turkey must stand up to forces that are trying, to convince the citizens that there is no possibility for such a solution and to shape consciousnesses accordingly.

The meeting was attended by the Head of Foreign Affairs Giorgos Katrougalos, the head of International and European Affairs of SYRIZA-PS, Danai Koltsida and the diplomatic advisor of the President, Vangelis Kalpadakis.
