“Be absolutely sure and confident that we will stand by the side of society in the coming difficult months” said the Prime Minister, among other things
At the start of the work of the meeting of presidents DEEP and DIMTO of the ND spoke today Kyriakos Mitsotakis. The prime minister, starting his speech, thanked the Secretariat of Organization and Stelios Kontadakis, stating that he never forgets that both his father and his uncle have been friends of Konstantinos Mitsotakis since the 50s.
Mr. Mitsotakis said that with this first meeting of the DEEP and DIMTO presidents of the ND, they are keeping alive the relationship between the government and him personally with the party base.
“I attach great importance to the organizational and communication readiness of the party. We proved from the first moment that the Greek people trusted us that we will not neglect our party function because of our government duties. You know, it’s always a big challenge how a party manages power in terms of party organization. I believe that we have achieved a lot in these three years and the party today is more organized, more functional, more ready than it was in 2019 and this gives me a lot of security,” the prime minister underlined.
Kyriakos Mitsotakis repeated that the elections will take place at the end of the four years, in 2023, and speaking about the government project, he said that it is comprehensively reflected in the brochure entitled “We said it, we did it”.
“It is always worth the effort to go through this scope, width and depth of the government’s work, because what we have achieved in these 40 months is indeed great and there is a lot”, the prime minister emphasized, noting that the ND practically implemented the entire her pre-election program.
“We had promised that we will cut taxes, we cut them. We had pledged that we will create many new jobs and we succeeded. We were committed to attracting significant foreign investments and we will once again make Greece a protagonist in exports and innovation, we succeeded. We had pledged that the prestige of the country would be enhanced and the country would become stronger and safer. And we succeeded. We were committed to a new, modern Education, which will be based on stronger schools, on teachers who will have the power to teach their children with greater autonomy from the Ministry of Education. We had committed to safe universities, we made it. I was a few days ago, here, very close, in a school in Nea Ionia and I spoke with our newly appointed teachers, 25,000 permanent appointments in Education for the first time after 12 years”, the Prime Minister continued, pointing out that all this happened while the government managed many crises. On this he referred to migrant invasion of the Evros, in pandemic and now at war in the heart of Europe, with unprecedented implications for the explosion of global inflation.
“Of course one great judgment of accuracy which we must face. And I assure you that we are doing it as best as we can and as efficiently as we can and we have the resources to do it precisely because our economy is growing much faster than what we also estimated,” he added.
Kyriakos Mitsotakis also emphasized that the government can and does support society today because we have high growth and there is the fiscal margin “through investments, through tourism, through exports, to be able to turn our gaze to the weakest and to we can assure the Greek citizens that even in this difficult winter ahead of us, we will stand by them”.
Mr. Mitsotakis referred to heating oil which opened at 1.30 because, as he said, there was a systematic work and intervention while he noted that the government has an additional 300 million for those households that are entitled to the heating allowance, with obviously a greater emphasis on northern Greece, at the highest altitudes, there which we know that the heating needs are greater.
“So I want you to be absolutely sure and certain that we will stand by society in the coming difficult months. We will fully implement the commitments I made in Thessaloniki, when I outlined the road map we must follow from now until the national elections”, underlined Mr. Mitsotakis, stressing that the ND government will also be the one that for the first time increase pensions from 1.1.2023.
“We will be the ones to definitively abolish the solidarity levy for everyone, civil servants and pensioners. We are the ones who secured the financial resources to be able to give 250 euros with much more extended criteria to our fellow citizens who really need it at Christmas, to cope with this inflation, which – as I had the opportunity to I explained yesterday in the Parliament quite in detail – it is not only a Greek phenomenon, obviously. It is a global phenomenon that must be addressed not only at the national, but also at the European level,” he added.
Mr. Mitsotakis also said that Greece, as a result of the developments in Brussels, is today a protagonist in shaping European policies for the benefit of all European citizens.
“And I believe that if the citizens are looking for something, today, in these turbulent times – where nobody really knows what will dawn on us the next day – it is these three words that formed the core of our slogan at the Thessaloniki International Fair: Consistency – we proved it-, Continuity and Stability”, he underlined.
Mr. Mitsotakis emphasized that stability is required so that we know that there is a government and a Prime Minister who knows how to manage crises.
In addition, he stated that he has asked the ministers and they are responding to this, that there is no government echelon that goes to the region and does not meet with the party officials.
“You know that when I travel around the country, I always make sure not only to find time to discuss with local organizations, but we lean on local problems and provide solutions, cooperating with the Local Government, with Mayors, with Regions. There are no colors in local problems. And that is why we will have the opportunity at the end of the four years to demonstrate a project that will not simply be horizontal at the national level, but we will be able to say that yes, we have launched the most projects ever launched by a government at the local and regional level. With most financial tools, with the “Antonis Tritsis” Program, for example, which enabled Municipalities to run a series of projects and to resolve pending issues of the past, with important projects of national scope that were stuck in the gears of the bureaucracy “, write down.
On this he referred to Metro in Piraeus underlining that “we don’t like tarpaulins, we like real projects, we don’t care about communication, we care about the essence and this is ultimately what distinguishes us from our political opponents”.
Speaking for SYRIZA he said that the main opposition party is not our benchmark. “We deal with the problems and demands of our citizens, we listen to the citizens and we talk about our work with the necessary modesty, because we recognize that we may have achieved a lot, but there is still a lot that needs to be done. We know that society is being tested today, we know that wages in our country are still low, we know that there are aspects of social policy where progress must be even faster. That is why it is very, very, very important – and I ask you this from the bottom of my heart – in your communication with the party organizations, with our executives and also with the citizens, to always demonstrate this understanding of society’s problems and may the arrogance of success never enter our speech,” he said.
And he stressed: “There is a ‘fine line’ between being proud of our achievements and being arrogant and considering ourselves almost irreplaceable.” We must always be on the right side of that line. This is the only way we will convince the citizens, and especially the most suspicious ones, that indeed the New Democracy deserves to be able to continue this great work that has been started so far. And this is the main reason why we insist in the next elections to talk about the need for an independent Greece, not just an independent New Democracy”.
Kyriakos Mitsotakis said that the ND is a party that respects its principles and values but can at the same time expand, open, renew, change.
“We are looking for self-reliance because the next day the country will need stability and speed in decision-making. Because we have proven that we can manage crises and we can steer the ship of our country safely in the turbulent waters of a global geopolitical reality which, unfortunately, is constantly changing”, he underlined and declared that “ultimately the party is the one that will lead us in another great electoral victory”.
“I am the Prime Minister of Greece because I am the President of the New Democracy. Thank you very much, be well. Good strength and good success in your work”, the prime minister added in closing his speech.
