But he has “no intention of meeting the successor at the G20 summit”, the Group of 20 largest and fastest growing economies
US President Joe Biden has “no intention” of meeting Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman at next month’s G20 summit in Indonesia, White House National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan said today.
“The president basically said he’s going to reevaluate our relationship with Saudi Arabia because (Riyadh) has sided with Russia against the interests of the American people,” Sullivan said when asked on CNN about the deteriorating relationship between Riyadh and of Washington following the cut in OPEC+ production quotas, which benefits Russia.
“These are relationships that have been built up over decades of bipartisan support,” Sullivan added. “So the president is not going to act hastily, he’s going to act methodically, strategically, and take his time to consult with members of both parties, and also have the opportunity to go back to Congress and be able to sit down with them in person and to process the options”.
But he has “no intention of meeting the successor at the G20” summit of the Group of 20 largest and fastest-growing economies, he said.
The Biden adviser noted that among the options being considered in relation to reassessing relations with Riyadh are “changes in our approach to military assistance to Saudi Arabia.”
Last week, OPEC+ — the 13 members of the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) led by Saudi Arabia and their 10 partners led by Russia — decided to cut production quotas in order to support crude prices that fall.
A price hike would bail out the coffers of Russia, which relies on sales of its hydrocarbons to finance the war in Ukraine.
