Decisive, at the Greek and European level, for dealing with the energy crisis that is plaguing Europe, is the week that begins with the Maximos Palace having its eyes fixed on any decisions taken in the upcoming EU Summit On October 20 and 21 in Brussels.

The Greek Prime Minister’s proposal to impose a ceiling remains on the table of the 27 leaders in the price of natural gas, which gathers the support of fifteen of the 27 member states, with the Greek side having often emphasized that a European solution is necessary. For this reason, Athens is expected to fight another hard battle in the session, but at the same time it also holds a small basket due to the approach mainly of Berlin, as the Solz government appears to be moving unilaterally to address the problem in Germany. According to government officials, however, it is almost certain that there will be a decision on the joint supply of natural gas by the member states in 2023, according to the standards of the coronavirus vaccines, while on the contrary, it is recognized that reaching consensus on the imposition of a ceiling remains extremely difficult and uncertain venture.

The decisions of the 27 European leaders will in any case also act as a “domino” for the corresponding decisions that the Maximos Palace will have to take in the next period and at the national level, weighing the European plan that will be chosen and at the same time the Greek performance of the of the Greek economy, in order to draw up the “updated” Greek plan to support households and businesses.

According to information, against the ongoing energy crisis and the winter that is just around the corner, the perspective of a new support package is being considered, focusing in the first phase on the increased prices of diesel and heating oil. After all, Kyriakos Mitsotakis himself on Friday during the “prime minister’s hour” in the Parliament left open the possibility of intervention in diesel fuel at a time when the unprecedented phenomenon is observed, costing more than the price of gasoline. Besides, the prime minister now holds weekly meetings on all aspects of energy, with the final decisions depending on a number of factors and not expected before the end of October or the beginning of November.

According to the same sources, and in the event that better price control is not achieved at the European level, then it is considered certain that the Greek government will act unilaterally, with the continuation of the policy of subsidies as the main tool, as the prime minister has repeatedly assured, that is as long as the energy crisis continues, the support for households and businesses will continue.

However, it is now clear that the Maximos Palace it is not expected to move along the logic of measures such as the reduction of VAT on basic items or the reduction of the Excise Tax on fuel. These are measures that are being pushed by the opposition, but nevertheless, the Maximos Palace considers that these are measures that are extremely doubtful if their final benefit will reach consumers or will be lost along the way of products from production to retail shelves, while regarding the excise tax on fuel, outweighs the benefit it gives to public revenues.
