Economy and accuracy at the heart of the battle with the ND on the way to the polls – What the president of SYRIZA said about the Greek-Turkish affairs, the Patsis case, Nikos Androulakis

By Antonis Anzoletou

Launching severe criticism of the government in the field of the economy o Alexis Tsipras in the interview he gave to the main bulletin of SKAI news and Kosioni Co made it clear that the battle with Maximos on the way to the polls will focus on the question of accuracy. He spoke about the country’s negative firsts in inflation indices, low wages and once again blamed the government for the excess profits from energy. “From the taxation of 90% of the surplus profits, 800 million euros should have been collected, either according to RAE’s data for six months, or according to our calculations, 1.9 billion euros,” he said.

The president of SYRIZA accused the financial staff of not conducting checks on the market, as price increases in supermarkets on a number of products are a daily phenomenon. He estimated that all this is a political choice that Maximos has made in order to leave the filthy lucre unchecked and not to hit the interests.

The Patsis case

He made special reference to the case of the removal of the MP of the New Democracy Andreas Patsis, as it is connected to the issue of red loans that are not regulated and real estate auctions: “What is the biggest deception than this? Is it possible to talk about supporting the middle class and people’s wealth going under the hammer? Is it possible that when we were in government and had the troika over our heads we had bankruptcy law that protected the first home and today we have a bankruptcy law that hammers out the first home? Is it possible to have no regulation and distribute the bad loans, people’s houses, to the Patsis?”

Making it clear that SYRIZA will insist a lot on the issue of the former member of parliament of Grevena, the official opposition leader said: “Mr. Patsis symbolizes the looting of the public wealth by the blue locusts that have fallen like rodents”. Mr. Tsipras accused the government that a “process of major redistribution of the country’s wealth from the middle class which is burdened, from the weak to some powerful” is underway. This process, he added, is done “through the maintenance of high VAT and excise duty when inflation has reached 12%, when prices are climbing and at the same time we have the maintenance of profiteering in energy”.

The assessment of the attitude of Nikos Androulakis

The official opposition leader was also asked about the perspective of progressive governance given the distance PASOK still maintains from SYRIZA. He estimated that when Nikos Androulakis finds himself with “a hot potato in his hands” he will reflect on his responsibilities. “Under the weight of the people’s verdict”, Mr. Tsipras argued that the conditions for “progressive governance” can be formed, stating that “we will not discuss the country’s governance program before the elections, as all parties will fight for the best possible result, in the simple proportional ballot box”.
In relation to the elections, the president of SYRIZA reiterated that he claims to be the winner in the elections. Regarding the case that he is second by a small margin, he replied: “Even if the beans come out there is a question of moral legalization.” According to Mr. Tsipras, the simple proportional ballot box is different from the others. Because in it, as he mentioned, “the citizen will know in advance who has the possibility to form a government with collaborations and who does not”, pointing to the side of New Democracy and the rift in its relations with PASOK after the case of surveillance.

For Greek-Turkish

For the Greek-Turkish and the escalation of Ankara’s rhetoric, Mr. Tsipras accused the government of not taking advantage of the advantage it had with the election of Joe Biden to the US presidency. “Turkey has recently seen that ground is being left for claims. He wants the creation of accomplishments. From the country’s side, significant opportunities were not exploited. In 2021, after the election of Biden, Turkey was weakened diplomatically. I had asked the government to undertake an initiative of active diplomacy and to connect Greek-Turkish with a positive agenda in Euro-Turkish. And to connect the perspective of the EU customs review. – Turkey with The Hague. He argued that during that period, Mitsotakis focused on the strengthening of armaments.

Regarding the expansion of territorial waters in the Eastern Mediterranean, the former prime minister clarified that SYRIZA did not proceed with this move when it was in government, as at that time the Turkish-Libyan memorandum did not exist. He spoke of an inalienable sovereign right and recalled that when he had announced it, in February 2019, New Democracy officials such as Mr. Koumoutsakos and Mr. Kikilias had reacted very strongly.
