The Greek communities in the USA are among the most important of the Greek diaspora around the world, said the President of the Republic, in her greeting at the reception she gave on the occasion of the visit to Greece of representatives of American Universities in the context of the Synod “Beacon 2022: Cooperation of Greece” – USA in the Higher Education Sector.
The President of the Republic, Katerina Sakellaropoulou, hosted a reception tonight at the Presidential Palace in honor of the representatives of thirty American Universities, on the occasion of their visit to Greece, in the context of the “Beacon 2022: Greece-US Cooperation in the Higher Education” Summit, in the presence of the Minister of Education and Religious Affairs, Nikis Kerameos, as well as rectors of Greek Universities.
During her greeting, Mrs. Sakellaropoulou emphasized that “The Pharos Summit is a powerful symbol for the relations between the United States and Greece” and noted that “our two nations are connected by close cultural and historical ties. The foundations of American democracy can be traced back to the Athenian democracy, which was a source of inspiration for the vision embodied in the Federalist Papers. At the same time, the Greek communities in the USA are among the most important of the Greek diaspora around the world.”
He also underlined that this is the largest ever American delegation of the Institute of International Education to a specific country and added that “Greeks place a special value on education, not excluding universities, which are traditionally considered a critical factor of social mobility and development ” and remarked that “exploring them, you will perceive the high quality of the academic staff, the talent and inspiration of the new generation of students”.
In the same context, he pointed out that “this transatlantic bridge is a major educational challenge for Greek universities and greatly improves their international image. The interaction between American and Greek professors, students and researchers aims to broaden and deepen the scientific dialogue between the two countries, in order to contribute to academic innovation and corresponding achievements, as well as to increase the mobility of students and staff and to introduce new programs and degrees”.
He further asserted that “collaborations in the fields traditionally associated with Greece, such as classical studies and archaeology, are extremely important” and added “I am glad to see that these are not the only fields that are flourishing, as joint programs and research are also taking place in immigration studies, climate change, engineering, business administration, finance and elsewhere.”
Referring to the end of their trip to Greece, she expressed the hope that in the coming weeks, months and years, they will continue to honor and care for the seeds planted by this visit and at the same time cultivate their relations with their Greek colleagues, appropriating the results of this remarkable collaboration.
Concluding, the President of the Republic emphasized that in order for Greece to become an educational hub, attractive to teachers around the world, strategic synergies with the world’s leading universities are needed and she noted: “New and ground-breaking educational perspectives and opportunities emerge through the unique value of transnational collaborations and interpersonal ties”.

It is with great pleasure that I welcome such a distinguished delegation to the Presidential Palace. The Pharos Summit is a powerful symbol of the relationship between the United States and Greece. Our two nations are linked by close cultural and historical ties. The foundations of American democracy can be traced back to the Athenian democracy, which was a source of inspiration for the vision embodied in the Federalist Papers.
At the same time, the Greek communities in the USA are among the most important of the Greek diaspora around the world.
This is indeed the largest ever American delegation of the Institute of International Education to a specific country. Since your arrival, you have had the opportunity to visit various regions of Greece and our higher educational institutions.
Greeks place a special value on education, universities not excluded, which are traditionally seen as a crucial factor of social mobility and development. By exploring them, you will perceive the high quality of the academic staff, the talent and inspiration of the new generation of students. The synergies you develop have a great potential for change. This transatlantic bridge is a major educational challenge for Greek universities and greatly improves their international image. The interaction between American and Greek professors, students and researchers aims to broaden and deepen the scientific dialogue between the two countries, in order to contribute to academic innovation and corresponding achievements, as well as to increase the mobility of students and staff and to introduce new programs and degrees. While the collaborations in the fields traditionally associated with Greece, such as classical studies and archaeology, are extremely important, I am glad to see that these are not the only fields that are flourishing. Joint programs and research also take place in migration studies, climate change, engineering, business administration, finance and elsewhere.
At the end of this week-long journey, I wish to congratulate you warmly and hope that in the coming weeks, months and years, you will continue to honor and care for the seeds you planted with this visit. And, over time, you will continue to nurture your relationships with your Greek peers, reaping the benefits of this remarkable collaboration. For Greece to become an educational hub, attractive to professors around the world, depends mainly on strategic synergies with the world’s leading universities. New and ground-breaking educational perspectives and opportunities emerge through the unique value of transnational collaborations and interpersonal ties.
