Panagiotopoulos: To make use of the European initiatives in the joint supplies of defense equipment

The Minister of National Defense also emphasized the active Greek participation in the mission of providing military assistance to Ukraine

The need to make full use of the European initiatives for cooperation in the production and joint procurement of defense equipment, in a way that will ensure the interests of the EU member states, emphasized the Minister of National Defense, Nikos Panagiotopoulos, during it Foreign Affairs Council – EU Defence, held today in Brussels.

During his intervention, the Greek minister emphasized that the prevailing conditions and the security environment require today, more than ever, the full use of European initiatives for cooperation in the production and joint supplies of defense equipment (defense capabilities), in a way that will ensure the security interests of the member states and the EU, will contribute decisively to the strengthening of European security and defense, will have a positive impact on the European strategic autonomy, and to the strengthening of the defense industries of the EU member states.

N. Panagiotopoulos also underlined the active Greek participation in the mission of providing military assistance to Ukraine, in order to strengthen the country’s armed forces to defend its territorial integrity and sovereignty and to counter Russian revisionism. He also highlighted the importance of the European Peace Facility (EPF) in terms of direct and substantial support to Ukraine for the provision of defense material based on specific criteria, as well as the need for geographical balance in the activities financed by the Facility.

With regard to the EU’s actions in Africa, N. Panagiotopoulos emphasized the positive role of Niger as a democratic country and its contribution to addressing security challenges in the region and requested support for the country’s efforts to combat terrorism and control migration flows .

Finally, in the discussion on Ukraine, in which Ukrainian Foreign Minister Oleksii Reznikov and NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg participated via video conference, the Greek minister reiterated the undivided Greek support for Ukraine’s just struggle, and the need to continue providing every possible support, and supply of defense equipment.
