The government wants to show that SYRIZA does not act based on national interests, but opportunistically
By Antonis Anzoletou
From the first reading last week it becomes clear how New Democracy and SYRIZAthe two gladiators of power, will continue in “hard rock” rhythms to clash for the case of monitoring.
It is the choice of the official opposition to raise the issue very high on the agenda and the majority is forced not to let anything fall down. The “game” of impressions is very important in a pre-election period and for this reason the two parties have given more space to their “strong cards” to be publicly presented and answered.
The second reading reveals that Kyriakos Mitsotakis and Alexis Tsipras have drawn another card from the “deck”. The indicators of the “political clock” – after the placements of the prime minister in the Political Committee of the New Democracy and the leader of the main opposition in his Parliamentary Group – also point to national issues.
Turkey is in a pre-election period, the polls will be held almost at the same time as the Greek ones, therefore every move of the neighbors is carefully studied and every initiative taken from the inside goes through a “sieve”.
The government wants to show that SYRIZA does not act based on national interests, but opportunistically. They remind that his “86” MPs did not support important defense agreements and equipment that have now shielded our country against Ankara’s threats. “Mr. Erdogan, of course, does not hide that he would prefer Mr. Tsipras over him. But he has me, addressing him. And it has me because this is what the sovereign Greek people chose and no one else.
However, I address Mr. Erdogan sincerely when I tell him that Greece keeps the door closed to challenges but the window open to approaches”, said the prime minister at the meeting of the top body of the blue faction, raising the confrontation to red. At a time when precision prevails and the war in Ukraine threatens everything from Maximos, they are trying to suggest that the military collaborations in which Greece has progressed can also go hand in hand with economic and energy collaborations.
The prime minister spoke of a policy of “national self-reliance” recalling the extension of territorial waters to 12 miles in the Ionian Sea framed by treaties on maritime zones with Italy, with Egypt and soon with Albania.
To answer, Alexis Tsipras took a pass from Thursday’s diplomatic episode in Libya. He spoke of an “amateur prepared visit” and attempted to show that the phase difference between Kyriakos Mitsotakis and Nikos Dendias causes significant arrhythmias. “How much our foreign policy suffers from his insecurity and the absolute lack of trust and understanding with his minister, the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mr. Dendias, we see it develop in the last few days dramatically I would say in the Eastern Mediterranean, where unfortunately our decades-old national strategy is cancelled,” he said.
Foreign policy-making is not the prerogative of any faction and its “smooth transition and continuity” should be ensured. Nevertheless, there is no doubt that in the polarized environment that has been formed, the Greek-Turkish field will not be left out of the conflict. All signs indicate that strained relations with neighbors will take their pre-election place next to accuracy and monitoring until the polls are set up in late spring 2023. The only thing that can change is that the political developments run a little earlier.
