Tsipras: Progressive forces to provide sustainable and inclusive solutions for the future of the planet

We are talking about dealing with the crisis with a complete lack of solidarity and sense of the problem, he stressed

“Progressive forces on a global scale must provide sustainable and inclusive solutions for the future of the planet and humanity,” stressed Alexis Tsipras speaking at the international conference “Circle the MED Forum 2022” held in Zappeion.

The president of SYRIZA-PS pointed out that dealing with climate change requires difficult decisions and resources and that “the energy transition that we all agree on is expensive. The big question is who will pay for it […] The many, who own the least part of the wealth, or some few and powerful who own the overwhelming majority of the wealth of the planet”.

He stressed that if this happens, if the burdens of the necessary energy transition fall on the backs of the many, it will be an economically devastating process, which will break social cohesion and bring about great social tensions, as well as the rise of the extreme right and climate change deniers. . If the latter happens, then it will be a mutually beneficial process for both climate and societies.

Mr. Tsipras noted with an eye on the lower and middle classes that at the same time security, protection and a strong social state should be offered with necessary public and social benefit investments, which should be financed.

These should be financed not by debt-creating deficits, he said, with the middle and poor paying the bills, but – he stressed – “the solution is to tax the excessive profits of big business and high incomes”.

Referring to the EU he asked “what solidarity are we talking about”, saying in particular that “the energy crisis is treated as if it is only a problem of sufficiency and not a problem of high costs”, pointing out that the countries of the North mainly face the problem of sufficiency.

“It is not possible to move forward like this”, he stressed, commenting that today – after six months of discussions at the meetings of the Ministers of Energy and the Summits to find a solution that will be some directions to reduce the very high price of natural gas – , they are discussing a cap that is nearly three times the current price. “This will create bigger problems, the price will increase if the ceiling goes in there,” he stressed.

After this, he argued that “we are talking about dealing with the crisis with a complete lack of solidarity and a sense of the problem as far as the whole of the EU is concerned, but also with stupid political choices”.

He commented that “perhaps Mrs. von der Leyen’s office should go to Berlin, it would be easier to transfer orders, because Berlin-Brussels is a distance. Or for the Chancellery to be transferred to Brussels…”.
