Pessimism in Turkey about F-16s: Even if the US gives the “green light”, the first ones will arrive in 2028

The concern in Ankara is that when – and if – Turkey receives the fighters, the Greek armaments program will be much further ahead

The messages to Turkey regarding the receipt of the American F-16s are pessimistic, as even if an agreement is reached with Washington, the fighters will take a long time to reach Ankara.

If the US approves them, the first ones will come in 2028, commented the Turkish network Haber Turk, as reported by the correspondent of SKAI in Istanbul, Manolis Kostidis.

The concern in Ankara is that when – and if – Turkey receives the fighters, the Greek armament program will be much further ahead, as by then Greece will have received 120 F-16s, 24 Rafales and the Belharra frigates will have arrived .

The national fighter

Meanwhile, Turkey has unveiled its “national fighter”, which they hope will come out of the shed in 2023, before the elections.

However, analysts estimated that it will join the Turkish fleet from 2028 onwards, while 2030 will be on the air.

In more detail, military analyst Mete Jarar said that “the goal is in 2028 or 2030 for this aircraft to be able to fly with all its properties ready. This will be done in several phases.”

Hurriyet director Ahmet Hakan asked if it would outperform other aircraft, to which Yarar replied: “It won’t be equal to the F-35, but it will have the qualities of the F-22.”

“The F-22 is the best US fighter and they are not selling it to anyone,” he added.

Unacceptable attack by Omer Celik at the expense of Greece, Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis and Foreign Minister Nikos Dendias with insulting and disparaging characterizations.

THE a spokesman for Erdogan’s party accused Greece for “supporting terrorists”, while he estimated that if Turkey approaches Egypt, Greece’s “illegal steps” will fail.

Also using insulting descriptions, he said that Greece “practices a foreign policy of ‘tsandiri'”.

Celik said: “Greece, which we allowed to return to NATO after they had previously left, is today a country where terrorist organizations camp against Turkey, from FETO to the PKK terrorist organization. It is a country that actively supports them, where the organization (PKK) has camps.”

He continued: “Now, they are on high alert. What should we do in these areas against Turkey? What should we sign against Turkey? Or, how to handle all this?’ Because, if there is normalization between Turkey and Egypt, they fear that some illegalities, illegal steps by Greece in the Mediterranean, will fail.”
