Tsipras: The Health bill shows “how profoundly hypocritical you were during the pandemic”

Alexis Tsipras accused the Mitsotakis government of dogmatism and ideology on the occasion of the health bill. Speaking in Parliament, Mr. Tsipras said that despite the critical nature of the bill, the presence of ND MPs was limited. He found “reluctance” and added that it seems they are “in no mood to support the government project”. “They do hard work and serve a sentence,” he noted.

Mr. Tsipras argued that the bill shows “how profoundly hypocritical you were in the days of the pandemic when you talked about Social Security” and added that “you never believed in it.”

He recalled that “in 1983, when Andreas Papandreou, with the support of the Left, promoted this emblematic reform, your faction was talking about a Soviet-style health system and voted against it”. “You said the same to us when, despite the budgetary suffocation, we promoted the reform of primary care with the creation of TOMY” he pointed out.

Mr. Tsipras underlined that what “exists is the need for the State to provide decent healthcare conditions to all citizens. There is a need for people in a privileged State to feel basic security. That they will not be left helpless to die on the ranch, when they cannot afford it.”

He also accused the government that “a whole pandemic passed over us, a world-historical event that caused the whole planet to completely revise the neoliberal ideologies about the role of the state and especially the public health system. But you haven’t taken anything for granted.”
