Cavusoglu’s statements yesterday set fire to the Turkish media, where “war” discussions began
The Turkish Foreign Minister abandons the diplomatic language and unleashes threats, Mevlut Cavusogluwho yesterday called on Greece to demilitarize the islands, “otherwise we will come suddenly one night”.
“If the weapons don’t go away, we will challenge their sovereignty,” he added to the threats.
As the SKAI correspondent broadcasts from Istanbul, Manolis Kostidis, the Turkish journalist asked ÇavuÅŸoÄŸlu: “Recently, Greece conducted exercises on two islands, Rhodes and Lesvos, which should have a demilitarized status. Tanks, artillery units, attack helicopters and even multiple rocket launchers were also used in this exercise. How would you rate this exercise?’
Cavusoglu replied: “Unfortunately, Greece continues the provocation. Of course, it is not possible to remain silent in the face of this. There is a direct connection. And if Greece does not abandon this violation, their sovereignty will be discussed. Greece is taking negative steps against our security. He militarizes them (the islands) and takes other steps. Well, it is not possible to remain silent in the face of them. Greece must abandon this violation of the demilitarized status of the islands. Either Greece will back down on this issue, and abide by the Treaties, or we will do the right thing. That is why our President’s statement “We can come one night suddenly”.
Escalating his rhetoric he said: “So, it is not possible to remain silent and indifferent to these threats against us. Here Greece is the one that does not want peace and does not respect, does not respect the two Treaties. Therefore, we cannot remain silent on them. We will continue to take the necessary measures both in the legal field and in international organizations, especially the UN, and in the field. Greece must not forget that he who sows winds also reaps storms. Since you don’t want peace then we’ll do what we have to…suddenly one night.’

“War” discussions in the Turkish media
For their part, the Turkish media report that “we have made it clear that if the weapons do not go away, we will invade the Greek islands” and that “Greece’s exercise in Lesvos is a step before war”.
Journalist Semiha Sahin asked if the sovereignty debate means war and if there is a cause for war.
The political analyst Hasan Basri Yalcin replied: “But the exercise carried out by Greece in Lesbos is a step before the war. The political goal of Turkey is the demilitarization of these islands. Not only no military drills, no weapons at all. That’s what the Treaties say.”
Mete Jarar, a military analyst, said: “Also there will be no fleet near them and no flights over them.”
“When this does not happen, there are no other options left for Turkey. That is why Turkey declares ‘you are running out of options, then we can come one night. suddenly. When a Greek journalist in Prague asked our president ‘if you intend to invade the islands’. he said yes you got it right. We are indeed declaring that we can go to the islands,” Yalchin said.
Turkish analysts said that “we have the right to legitimate defense, we can intervene on the militarized islands.”
Haber Turk presenter Meltem Ajet said: “Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu reacted to Greece that carried out military exercises on the islands with a demilitarized regime. Cavusoglu in the joint press conference with his Romanian counterpart also answered questions and emphasized that ‘whoever sows reaps storms. And if Greece doesn’t want peace, then we will do what we have to…one night suddenly.”
Professor of International Relations Naim Baburoglu commented: “Due to Greece’s exercise, Turkey’s right to legitimate defense has been created according to Article 51 of the UN. Why legitimate defense. Because Greece is unilaterally changing the status of the islands, which according to international treaties should be demilitarized and now they are a threat. Now there is a new threat creation that is 18 or even 5.5 kilometers away. The right of self-defense includes war as well as oppressive diplomacy. Let’s emphasize that.”
