The most obvious reason why Kyriakos Mitsotakis is moving in the direction of completing the constitutional term of the government
By Antonis Anzoletou
In Thursday’s debate on the EYP bill, the prime minister did not fail to repeat that the elections will be held at the end of the four-year period. The pre-election climate is already so polarized that whenever Kyriakos Mitsotakis does not rule out early polls, the scenarios of how the political developments will run flare up and when he emphatically emphasizes it, his party opponents do not believe him.
Those who are convinced that in the end the prime minister will not surprise bring forward the issue of ballots. In New Democracy, as is the case with the other parties, most of the names have been locked. Announcements are expected before the end of the year. The current MPs are in an advantageous position because they know that they will once again fight the battle of the cross. From there there are three categories: those who have received the “green light”, those who are waiting and those who are still being scouted. None of them can carry out the election campaign they want. The fair is have enough time ahead of them, and to communicate with their constituents as well as caucus members. And for New Democracy, however, it is in its interest that the new blue-collar executives have a long time ahead of them to develop their potential, to make use of their acquaintances and the “gel” that they can possibly make in the local communities.
The prime minister needs several days to carry out the tours he wishes in both mainland and island Greece. The government program must be analyzed as well as the actions of the government from 2019 to date. On the burning issue of the economy, which decides every electoral contest, they turn their gaze from the government camp. The “basket” of the budget that is voted in exactly one week, the possibility of using new fiscal space for additional benefits, but also the increase of the minimum wage on May 1 cannot be left out of the equation. It is necessary for the “sand in the hourglass” to run a little longer, perhaps until May, in order for the results of the economic policy to be seen, but also for the cold, especially in Northern Greece, to have stopped.
There may not be much scope for a significant increase in turnout, but another reason why the blue faction wants to avoid early polls is the vote of emigrants. The data shows that there is not much interest and there is a possibility that a renewed campaign will be needed in order to explain what exactly applies and who has the right to subscribe to the lists.
The most obvious reason for which Kyriakos Mitsotakis is moving in the direction of completing the constitutional mandate of the government is SYRIZA’s insistence on an early appeal to the polls. The prime minister does not want to “please” Alexis Tsipras. They are well aware in Herodos Attikou that on the occasion of the surveillance case, an appeal to the popular verdict will very soon be interpreted as an attempt to “escape from the coming revelations”. There are many blue-collar officials who explain that since the opinion polls give a margin of safety over the official opposition, Kyriakos Mitsotakis has no reason to rush. Also, the closer to July the elections are held, the more chances there are to partially restore the relations between Piraeus and Charilaou Trikoupis, which have suffered a deep rift after the case of monitoring Nikos Androulakis’s mobile phone. In any case, political, economic and social developments are the guide for the final decisions.
