48-year-old journalist Grant Wall, with tenure at CBS Sports and Sports Illustrated, lost consciousness and collapsed at Lusail Stadium in Qatar.

US journalist Grant Wall collapsed on Friday while covering the World Cup quarter-final match between the Netherlands and Argentina, his family said, and US Soccer confirmed.

The 48-year-old journalist, with stints at CBS Sports and Sports Illustrated, lost consciousness and collapsed at Lusail Stadium in Qatar. After an attempt at cardiopulmonary resuscitation, he was taken to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead. It is not clear if he died on the field or while being transported to the hospital.

Grant Wall recently revealed that at the World Cup match between the USA and Wales he was detained for about half an hour for wearing a pro-LGBTQ T-shirt.

His brother, Eric Wall, expressed suspicions of foul play: “My brother was healthy. He told me that he received threats on his life. I can’t believe my brother just died like that. I believe they killed him. And I’m begging for any help,” he said in a video he posted on Instagram.

The American Football Federation issued a statement in which it declares itself devastated by the untimely loss of the journalist and expresses its condolences to the family of the deceased.
