“Mr. Papaioannou was appointed Permanent Representative to the International Organizations in Geneva by Presidential Decree from August 4” reports the Ministry of Foreign Affairs

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs characterizes the reports in a section of the media about the “removal” of the representative of the ministry, Ambassador Alexandros Papaioannou, as deliberate falsification and an attempt to completely distort reality.

The announcement of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs emphasizes the following: “The reference to a – fortunately small – portion of print and electronic media about the alleged “removal” of the Representative of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Alexandros Papaioannou, is intentional falsification in spite of the real facts, which were already known to all. It is also attempt to completely distort realitywithout observing the elementary rules of journalistic ethics.

Mr. Papaioannou was appointed Permanent Representative to the International Organizations in Geneva by Presidential Decree from 4.8.22 published in the Government Gazette on 11.8.22.

His posting order was issued on 07.9.22 with an assumption of duty, which was set for the second ten days of December, to take place on 12.12.22 in order to deliver credentials before the end of the year and the Christmas holidays in Switzerland.

In fact, in view of assuming his duties, he had held a series of meetings with Government Ministers in the last few days, on issues related to his new duties, such as with the Minister of Immigration and Asylum, Mr. Noti Mitarakis, who also made a relevant post on 7.12.2022 on social media.

It is also known that in the last weeks, in view of Mr. Papaioannou’s departure, part of his duties were carried out by the current Representative and then Deputy, George Arnaoutis.

Finally, on Tuesday 6.12.2022, at 14.00, a ceremony was held at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs ahead of Mr. Papaioannou’s departure to Geneva, in the presence of not only members of the Diplomatic Corps, but also representatives of the press.

The above, which was already known since yesterday, Friday 9.12.2022, when the first false reports on the issue were published, were deliberately concealed and continue to be concealed today in specific media.”
