The energy ministers of its member countries The European Union they did not reach a final agreement on the imposition of a cap in the price of natural gas during their meeting today, two European officials told Reuters.
The ministers will continue their discussions on the matter at the already scheduled meeting next Monday, one of the officials said.
According to Reuters, Germany’s Minister of Economy Robert Hambeck he said progress had been made on the technical issues linked to the cap, but there was still no agreement. He also left open the possibility that a solution could be reached not by unanimity but by majority.
“We have reached a 90-95% agreement on the gas price ceiling but the big and symbolic issues have not yet been resolved,” Habeck said, noting that countries need more time.
According to Joseph Sikelawho presided over the meeting, next Monday there will be only one topic of discussion, the height of the price ceiling on natural gas.
As stated by the Energy Commissioner Country Simpsonmore time is needed, although progress has been made on technical matters.
According to the same sources, the energy ministers came very close to an agreement, however they failed to find the golden ratio at the height of the ceiling.
The purpose and process of deactivating the cap was agreed, while proposals for caps from 200 to 220 euros and then from 220 to 260 euros were put on the table. At these prices, no agreement was reached.
