In Brussels, Kyriakos Mitsotakis for the EU-ASEAN Summits and the European Council

Ukraine and energy on the agenda of the 27 – Kyriakos Mitsotakis will have bilateral meetings with the Prime Minister of Singapore, the Prime Minister of Thailand and the Prime Minister of Vietnam

The Prime Minister, Kyriakos Mitsotakis, who is going to Brussels today, is going to participate in the EU – Association of Southeast Asian Nations ( ASEAN ) Summits, as well as that of the European Council.

According to government sources, on the sidelines of the EU-ASEAN Summit, Kyriakos Mitsotakis is expected to have bilateral meetings with the Prime Minister of Singapore Lee Hsien Loong, the Prime Minister of Thailand Prayut Chan o Cha and the Prime Minister of Vietnam.

In these meetings, issues of strengthening bilateral cooperation in areas of common interest, international issues are expected to be discussed, while emphasis is expected to be placed on International Law and the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS).

As reported, our country supports the deepening of the EU-ASEAN strategic cooperation and the development of a European strategy for cooperation in the Indo-Pacific and attaches importance to issues of maritime trade, free navigation and maritime security.

On the agenda of the EU-ASEAN Summit, which will be co-chaired by the President of the European Council and the Prime Minister of Cambodia, Hun Sen, who holds the ASEAN Presidency, are reportedly going to be security challenges, trade, green and digital transition, as well as food security.

In the meantime, the support to Ukraine, but also the issue of energy and in this case the evaluation of the progress after the relevant decisions of the European Council of October – yesterday moreover the energy ministers met on this in Brussels – are the main topics on the agenda of Thursday’s European Council.

It is also recalled that on the energy front, Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis from the very beginning tabled proposals for solutions at the European level both in terms of natural gas prices and the protection of consumers from the great volatility of the markets, as well as in terms of energy supplies and security of supply.

Government sources emphasize that Greece will continue to claim a European solution to the issue of energy prices.

At the same time, as the prime minister emphasized at the EUMED9 Summit in Alicante, Europe must move strategically and united on the issue of supplies ahead of next winter.

In fact, the agenda of the 27 will also include the strategic discussion on security and defense following the informal European Council of Versailles last March, as well as Euro-Atlantic relations on a wide range of issues, with economic cooperation and cooperation at the forefront in the field of security.
