The mayor of Athens, Kostas Bakoyannis, spoke of a “truly dark day for Democracy in neighboring Turkey” in a post on Facebook after the sentencing decision for the mayor of Istanbul, Ekrem Imamoglou in two years and seven months.
Specifically, he wrote in his Facebook post: “A truly dark day for Democracy in neighboring Turkey. The decision to deny the freedom and political rights of a mayor, an ally of Peace, Justice and Universality, causes sadness and anger. I personally contacted my friend, the Mayor of Istanbul, Ekrem Imamoglou, and conveyed to him the absolute support and cooperation of all colleagues, who participate in the cooperation and diplomacy efforts of our cities. I am sure that the people and history will vindicate him.”
