The government representative was categorical in the possibility of reducing the VAT, arguing that this would create a deficit, which taxes would have to increase to cover.
“The deficit of three and a half billion that we would have if the VAT was reduced on certain goods like in Spain, would put us in bigger adventures that we don’t want to return to,” government spokesman Yannis Oikonomou told SKAI.
THE government representative, he explained that the resulting deficit would have to be covered and this means “taxes and burdens on the whole of society”.
According to Mr. Economou, the footprint for the consumer is greater with the “Market pass” as if we were to abolish VAT on certain items, the profit for the pocket of, for example, a family with two children would be smaller.
He also stated that he has doubts as to whether the potential VAT reduction would actually go into the consumer’s pocket.
Mr. Economou emphasized that the government has chosen to take support measures, taxing the excess income from the great wealth, without creating a burden on the budget.
