Turkey fears the extension of territorial waters in Crete

Turkish analysts argue that if an extension is made to 12 miles from Crete, then the passage they have to the Aegean will be “closed”

There is strong concern in Turkey about the possibility of the extension of Greece’s territorial waters to 12 miles, through Crete.

As SKAI correspondent Manolis Kostidis reports from Istanbulyesterday’s statements by Mevlut Cavusoglu in the last days of the year – which brought a strong reaction both from Greece and from the State Department – are not just random, as the neighbors have put their eye on any move by the Greek side concerning the Crete, arguing that if an extension is made to 12 miles from Crete, then the passage they have to the Aegean will be “closed”.

Turkey’s threats of war against Greece in case of an extension of its territorial waters in the Aegean were heard for the first time in 1995 by the then vice-president of the Turkish parliament, Kamer Gents, who announced:

“Turkey has vital interests in the Aegean. The Turkish National Assembly, however, hopes that the Greek government will not take the decision to extend territorial waters beyond 6 miles in the Aegean, which will change the balance established by the Treaty of Lausanne. But for this eventuality, we decide and announce to Greece and the whole world that in order to defend the vital interests of our country, the Parliament authorizes and transfers its powers to the Turkish government to take all the necessary measures, including military measures”.

Turkish analysts: “The Turkish intervention in Crete has a specific strategy”

As Metehan Demir, political analyst of the Haberturk television network, commented, “Greece and Crete are attempting something different. Instead of extending its territorial waters to 12 miles in the Aegean. He is going to do a gradual expansion of territorial waters to 12 miles in Crete and to do this later in the Aegean as well.

They already did something similar in the Ionian Sea and they had already sent the message that they will expand territorial waters in Crete, that is, from the other side of the mainland with the aim of sending a message to Turkey.

Now there was the intervention of Turkey as in case Greece expands its territorial waters in the Aegean from 6 miles to 12 miles the share it will hold in the Aegean will increase to 70% from the 35% it is today.

Floros continues to be targeted by the Turkish media

At the same time, the Turkish mass media continue to deal protractedly with the celebratory visits of AGEETHA Konstantinos Floros to the Akriti islands.

Specifically, the Turks comment:

“Let’s go to Greece, which continues the challenges in the Aegean. This time the head of the Armed Forces of Greece visited the islands which should be demilitarized and inspected the military exercises. Greece that takes courage from the US while NATO maintains its silence on this behavior”.

“Greece is again a provocation that will increase the tension in the Aegean. The head of the Armed Forces of Greece, Konstantinos Floros, visited the islands with a demilitarized regime. Greece, which ignores international treaties, is gathering military forces on the islands which must be demilitarized in accordance with the Lausanne and Paris treaties.”
