Economou: The prime minister is working tirelessly for the return of the Parthenon Sculptures

The government’s ultimate goal is to return, reunite the Parthenon Sculptures in the Acropolis Museum, the government spokesman pointed out

The Prime Minister is working tirelessly and talking to international personalitiess for the return of the Parthenon Sculptures. At the same time, Mr. Tsipras chooses as his interlocutors persons who indulge in vulgar posts on social networks. The difference is revealing and any other comment is redundant, the government representative said in response to questions about the Virgin Sculptures. Giannis Oikonomou.

When asked to inform the political editors about the issue of the Parthenon sculptures, Mr. Economou stated that we have come a long way and the government continues the effort to reunite them as required in a negotiation that is not easy. “The ultimate goal is to return, to reunite the sculptures of the Parthenon in the Acropolis Museum,” he stressed. He also said that the negotiation is ongoing and that such issues that transcend electoral and political circles should not be included in the polar or much less in the micro-political confrontation. It requires, he said, responsibility, respect, consistency and work. “If the effort is successful, it will be a huge national success. Some don’t stand awkwardly. Successes are homegrown regardless of who is in government. The government is working for this great success. It would be good for SYRIZA to limit its embarrassment and inexplicable reactions. Our policy does not recognize the British Museum any right of ownership, jurisdiction or possession”, emphasized Mr. Oikonomou.

Responding to those who accuse the government of using the issue of the Parthenon sculptures as a tool, Mr. Economou stated that any suspicion of such a thing is nullified because the government from the first moment dealt seriously with the issue and has significant results to show. “We seek the best possible result for the homeland, for our Culture. The process and negotiation is ongoing. The government has never denied information. We have to stay focused on the result following the best tactics”, he added.

Answering a question about whether there is a possibility of borrowing the sculptures, he said that the negotiation takes place within a specific framework of principles embraced by the two countries and governments and realistically taking the historical context that has been formed.

“We will achieve the goal within the line of responsible and effective negotiation. This is the point, this is the goal,” he said.
