“From the north-eastern tip of Greece, the capital of the Prefecture of Evros in recent years is turning into an important energy crossroads” said the Minister of Environment and Energy
The strategic importance of the construction and operation of the Alexandroupoli Power Plant, at a time when “the myth of an energy-secure Europe has been dispelled”, was highlighted today from the capital of Evros by the Minister of Environment and Energy, Kostas Skrekas.
Referring to the huge, as he said, energy crisis affecting Europe, he outlined the “energy architecture”, the organized plan of the government and the efforts it is making in order to “contribute to the European solution to ensure the energy sufficiency of Greece and Europe… ”, a plan with three main axes.
– Ensuring affordable prices for electricity and energy as a whole for households, professionals and businesses, with the allocation for 2022 of eight billion euros to support electricity bills, specifying that only a third of this comes from the state budget and 70% by a mechanism for taxing the surplus profits of power companies.
-Ensuring Greece’s supply sufficiency, with the timely and decisive strengthening of the country’s energy security through the implementation of iconic energy infrastructures and building international alliances.
– The structural transformation of the Greek energy sector by accelerating the green transition in a balanced manner. “In an environment of generalized crisis, we are increasing our energy competitiveness by promoting and accelerating Renewable Energy Sources as well as energy storage projects,” he said characteristically. Indicative of the effectiveness of this planning, according to the Minister of Environment and Energy, are the quantitative data on the installation of Renewable Energy Sources. Specifically, as he mentioned, from 2015 to 2018, approximately 100-200 MW of RES were installed, constructed and connected in Greece, while only in 2022, 1700 MW of RES were built, i.e. twice the power in one year compared to the aforementioned four years.
Mr. Skrekas also made special mention of the government’s energy planning for the area of Alexandroupolis, which “from the northeastern tip of Greece has turned into the center of energy developments. The capital of the Prefecture of Evros in recent years is turning into an important energy crossroads”.
Underlining the support for development in the region of Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis, a sign of which, as he noted, is the frequency of his presence in Alexandroupolis, he reiterated that “at this moment, Alexandroupolis is turning into an energy crossroads between Asia, the Balkans and the Mediterranean”. An energy hub that ensures the energy shielding not only of Greece but of the Balkans and Southeast Europe. “It is worth noting that in 2022 a large percentage of the natural gas used by our neighboring country Bulgaria, almost 70%, was transported from Greece,” he said.
Mr. Skrekas also mentioned the IGB and TAP pipelines as well as the FSRU. As he said IGB plays a very important role and it is planned to almost double its export capacity, while for TAP it is also planned to double its transport capacity. He characterized the FSRU as a visionary project, noting that the Kopelouzou Group has designed many visionary projects in the area of Alexandroupoli. “Electrical connections to the North, to the East and to the West doubled. By the end of the first quarter of 2023, the doubling of the electrical interconnection to Bulgaria will be completed,” he said, adding that to all of the above, one more axis must be added: the increase in installed capacity, i.e. electricity generation capacity in our country but with low carbon dioxide emissions coal because this is what will ultimately ensure the adequacy of electricity supply in our country as well as in the Balkans.
Finally, Mr. Skrekas, describing the characteristics and comparative advantages of the new power plant which will be supplied with natural gas directly from the FSRU, expressed the belief that Alexandroupolis can be the next energy hub. “We are working in this direction, to create in our country and here in Alexandroupoli a new natural gas energy hub of European standards. It is now clear that with fast but steady steps, with vision but also realism, our government is turning Greece into a key a pillar of energy security for the Balkans, but also a gateway for the transfer of energy from the Southern Mediterranean to Europe”
