The Chinese government stopped reporting data on Covid-19 infections and deaths in early December
China reported today that nearly 60,000 deaths have been linked to COVID-19 since early December, following complaints that the government has not released data on the state of the pandemic.
The death toll included 5,503 deaths due to respiratory failure caused by Covid-19 and 54,435 deaths from other diseases associated with Covid-19. The National Health Commission said those deaths occurred in hospitals, leaving open the possibility that more people may have died at home as a report would more than double China’s official death toll from Covid-19 to 10,775. It is noted that on January 8 the official count was 5,272 deaths.
The Chinese government stopped reporting data on Covid-19 infections and deaths in early December after virus controls were abruptly lifted, with the World Health Organization and other governments appealing to Beijing for more information amid a surge in infections.
