A. Schertsos: “An independent authority does not mean an uncontrolled authority”

by

The Minister of State in his statement to Parliament on the motion of no confidence against the government, accused SYRIZA of undermining national security for the country at an extremely critical juncture.

The Minister of State, Akis Skertsos sees a political impasse for SYRIZA behind the motion of no confidence in the government with motives, as he said, (a) the attempt of the official opposition party to erase the past of the institutional deviation that served for 4.5 years and ( b) managing an impending and inevitable defeat.

Mr. Skertsos, who spoke about the instrumentalization of ADAE by SYRIZA. he severely criticized some constitutionalists but also those who “lend their prestige” to SYRIZA’s view that Greece is losing its Europeanism, he noted that the officers of the official opposition “appear as honorees for actions and omissions, which supposedly harm the state of law, while at the same time, in the way you are handling such a serious case for Democracy and national security, you seem to be behaving anything but institutionally”.

There are so many fields of politics, in which there is real and tangible progress, that the opposition lacks a vital political space and this shows the political impasse of SYRIZA, said Mr. Skertsos, assessing that “that is why he is making a frantic effort, in the absence alternative proposal for the future, to take advantage by any legitimate and mainly unfair means, a confessed government failure that we were the first to diagnose and treat”.

He even emphasized that, “as long as SYRIZA does not change the leadership team and the minds that led the country to the sad and instructive parenthesis of 2015-2019, it will not be able to be a reliable proposal for power nor a reliable and oppositional voice”.

You are undermining national security for the country, at an extremely critical juncture, said Mr. Skertsos and continued: “You are taking advantage of the fact that we respect the Constitution, Justice, privacy, which we want and should characterize the operation of the EYP, and you want a National Intelligence Service, a strainer, and a Greece uncorked vine. This is truly inexcusable, while at the same time you are illegitimating and directly questioning, the role of Justice. Don’t be the judge. Don’t point the finger at Justice. You are directly questioning the role of justice as exclusively defined by the Constitution. To clarify this case alone. Not you. The Justice. As soon as possible. With respect to the privacy that constitutionally governs the democratic control of the EYP, which you do not respect,” he characteristically said.

Addressing the SYRIZA MPs, he said that

– you do not hesitate to drag the country abroad, as the case of the supposedly dead little Maria has shown.

-you do not hesitate to instrumentalize an independent authority, with the control, which you finally achieved in its joints, placing political figures who were your ministerial associates.

– you don’t hesitate to question the fighting worth of the Armed Forces and this becomes the front page of the Turkish press.

-you are not cursing for nothing, and turning your hatred for the government and the prime minister into a threat to the country.

That is why you are and will remain unfit to govern as long as you are possessed by such perceptions, said Mr. Skertsos and added: In the democracies, in the rule of law, which SyRiza forgot to guard when he was in government and in favor of which he is cutting now that he is in the opposition , everyone, without exception, must respect the Constitution and the laws.

He even emphasized that “no one is above the laws, nor is he entitled to interpret them as they see fit. From the President of the Republic to the most ordinary citizen and from the representatives of the three powers to the independent authorities. Because an independent authority does not mean uncontrollable principle” said the Minister of State emphatically.

He also underlined that the exclusive competence to judge the constitutionality of laws [..] it belongs to the courts and not to independent authorities. Our constitutionalists should know this first of all.”

Recently, he continued, “SYRIZA expressed the opinion that during the days of our government that Greece lost its Europeanism. They say they tried to take us out of the European Union. And if this accusation is funny, it is sad that they legitimize it, lending their prestige, some officers of what they suffered during the days of the previous government, the first time of the Left”.

Mr. Skersos concluded his speech by saying that “the biggest enemy of populists is reality, and the biggest judge is the ballot box. And the answers will be given to you, in the motion of no confidence, tomorrow, by a parliamentary group that is united as a fist , but also in a few months from the Greek people, who at the polls will vote to go forward, with the political forces they want and can, and not back, with those who remain a political and historical anachronism…”.
