The German foreign minister Analena Burbok has repeatedly made it clear that NATO should not get involved in the war in Ukraine, a spokesman for the German Foreign Ministry said today in response to the uproar created by a comment about war against Russia made by the minister.

In a speech on Tuesday at the Council of Europe in Strasbourg, Burbock said, speaking in English, that “we are fighting a war against Russia, not against each other.”

“Russian propaganda is constantly getting statements, proposals, attitudes, positions of the government, of our partners, and uses them to serve its purposes”, said the representative of the German Foreign Ministry today.

Zakharova: She asked for an explanation from the German ambassador

The representative of the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs Maria Zakharova demanded an explanation from the German ambassador in Moscow earlier today regarding “contradictory” statements from Berlin, pointing out that on the one hand Germany states that it is not part of the conflict in Ukraine, but on the other hand Burbok says that the countries of Europe are at war with Russia.

“Do they themselves understand what they are talking about?” Zakharova wrote on the Telegram messaging app.

Russian state media immediately used this statement as evidence that Germany and other EU countries are directly involved in the conflict in Ukraine and fighting against Russia.

Security expert Claudia Major of the German Institute for International Affairs and Security (SWP) told public broadcaster ZDF today that it was an “extremely unfortunate slip of the tongue” by Burbok, which is now being exploited by Russian state propaganda.
