Parliament: SYRIZA’s first abstention from voting – Varvitsiotis: “Turns its back on democratic institutions”

In the bill providing for the “Ratification of the Protocol of Accession to the Trade Agreement between the European Union and its Member States, on the one hand, and Colombia and Peru, on the other, to take into account the accession of Ecuador” the first non-participation of SYRIZA, in a vote of the Parliament, based on a relevant announcement by the leader of the official opposition, Alexis Tsipras, earlier today, at Zappeio Megaro.

During the elaboration of the bill by the competent parliamentary committee, this afternoon, the rapporteur of the minority Theodora Tzakri said that the agreement is proposed by a government which, as a consequence of the unrepentant unconstitutional behavior of its leader, has been delegitimized in practice, and has led us in the decision of the horizontal refusal to participate in the voting of any bill, from here on out, except one, which concerns the maintenance of the declared fascist forces outside the electoral process”.

Commenting on this decision of SYRIZA, the present Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Miltiadis Varvitsiotis, said that (a) it annuls the decision of the dominant Parliament last week, which rejected the motion of no confidence in the government, (b) that there is no and no parliamentary debate , which does not result in a vote, while the non-participation in it “essentially turns your back on democratic institutions”, and (c) that the way in which SYRIZA politicizes, “offers the ND very great services. It creates the the need for the citizen, in order to continue stability in the country and to have a safe and certain result in the polls, to give independence to Kyriakos Mitsotakis”.

In the context of the same meeting, and on the occasion of statements by the representative of SYRIZA, Popis Tsapanidou, the MP of PASOK-Movement for Change Andreas Loverdos, said that “PASOK is not blackmailed by anyone and for anyone. The statements made about the leader of the faction us with the insinuations left are impermissible, they are unacceptable and they are reprehensible. [..] “Syriza chose a very bad path ahead of the elections. They are used to turning every political battlefield into mud. And this time, we face them with vigor,” said Mr. Loverdos.

For his part, the MP of SYRIZA-PS, Giorgos Katrougalos said that “the outrageous things I have heard recently and about those sprayed and what I heard today is an effort that I do not consider honest. Those PASOK executives who want cooperation with the ND, instead of saying it directly and supporting the political reasons why they think this should be done, they use this indirect and in my opinion undermining the way democratic dialogue should be done”.

He even asked PASOK officials “not to undermine the climate in which we should go to the elections, not to use toxic expressions and above all to be honest with themselves. If you want to go with New Democracy, say so directly, and go”.
