Sakellaropoulou: “the joint diplomatic mobilization of our countries, Greece and Cyprus, consistently achieves the decisive intervention of the institutions of the European Union to prevent the Turkish methods for the emergence of the pseudo-state”

In a particularly cordial atmosphere, indicative of the excellent relations between Athens and Nicosia, today’s meeting between the President of the Republic Katerina Sakellaropoulou and the President of the Republic of Cyprus Nicos Anastasiades, who is making his last visit to Greece as President, in view of the Presidential Elections in Cyprus next Sunday.

President Katerina Sakellaropoulou welcomed President Anastasiades at the entrance of the Presidential Palace and then they entered her office, where their private meeting took place.

Mrs. Sakellaropoulou thanked Mr. Anastasiadis for their close cooperation over the years, and assured him that “as in the past, but also in the future, the close cooperation between Greece and Cyprus was and will be aimed at reaching an agreed solution in the framework of the decisions of the United Nations Security Council”.

He also emphasized that “the Turkish intransigence and aggression is not going to discourage us from firmly supporting the efforts of the Secretary General of the United Nations to find a common ground in order to resume negotiations.”

At the same time, he pointed out that “the joint diplomatic mobilization of our countries, Greece and Cyprus, consistently achieves the decisive intervention of the institutions of the European Union to prevent the Turkish methods for the emergence of the pseudo-state”.

Finally, he emphasized once again and assured President Anastasiades that “the Cypriot it is an ongoing concern and a top national issue in Greek foreign policy”.

For his part, the President of the Republic of Cyprus thanked her for the warm welcome and noted that his visit today has a dual nature.

“The first is that with the completion of ten years in the Presidency, my presence in the governance of the country also ends. I felt the need to express the gratitude of Cypriot Hellenism, as well as of myself personally, for the unfailing support I received throughout my time in the Presidency from the respective Greek Governments as well as the Presidency of the Hellenic Republic”, he said.

He also added that “if Cypriot Hellenism has survived, it is thanks to the support of the wider Hellenism, the Hellenic Republic, which at critical times stood by, both actively during the invasion, and later diplomatically. It is well known that through the impeccable, close and methodical diplomatic efforts made by the two countries, we have if nothing else achieved United Nations resolutions that create the shield to safeguard the Republic of Cyprus”.

Continuing, he observed that “at the same time, joint efforts within the European Union create the other dimension, the initiatives that Europe must undertake for a European problem, so that any solution, in addition to being functional and therefore sustainable, is fully consistent and with the European acquis. That is why I once again express my grateful thanks.”

Referring to the second reason for his visit, he underlined: “I am here, as a minimal sample of the appreciation towards the Greek Stateto the brotherly Greek People, the foundation stone for social housing and a park in the area destroyed in July 2018 in Mati, where irreplaceable lives were lost, but at least it was judged and considered that it would be a token of the love and solidarity expressed always mutually by the two states, the concession by the Republic of Cyprus of an amount of 10 million euros, in addition to private contributions, in order for us to contribute to the efforts made by the Greek state to alleviate the pain caused by that disaster”.

In closing, he emphasized: “I am sincerely glad to be with you. From the 1st of March I will be a simple private person, but I will not stop being a Greek fighter for peace, justice, social advancement”.

In response, Mrs. Sakellaropoulou thanked Nikos Anastasiadis, because, as she said, “the move made by the Republic of Cyprus for the Eye was just another proof of the solidarity and the close relationship between our two peoples, Greek and Cypriot Hellenism”. .

Finally, he wished them to continue their meetings in his new capacity and wished health for him and his wife Andri.
