We are neighbors, we have a past, we will also have a future,” he said the Minister of Foreign Affairs Nikos Dendias to journalists at the start of his visit to Argentina when asked by journalists about Greece-Turkey relations and whether they can improve after the devastating earthquake and the aid shipment to Turkey.
Nikos Dendias initially stated that “the Greek Government has expressed its deepest sorrow, at every level in Turkey, for the consequences of the devastating earthquake on the families of the victims. And we have offered whatever help we can and we will continue to offer it.”
He also pointed out that “this mutual wave of mutual understanding means something very basic: that the two societies, the Greek and Turkish societies, are very close, psychologically very close. We are neighbors, we have a past, we will have a future. I think, therefore, that what emerges is that the feelings between people are often different from those expressed by their leaders” the foreign minister continued and added that as far as Turkey is concerned aid to the country will continue.
“From then on, of course, the earthquake was not limited to Turkey, a very large part of Syria has also been affected, it has been hit. Regardless of the sanctions policy against the Syrian regime, we have from the beginning tried to help in any way we can. We have contacted the Patriarchate of Antioch, we have contacted the United Nations. Human suffering has no borders, faces no sanctions. The Greek Government will do everything it can to help where it can, of course, also in Syria,” underlined Nikos Dendias.
