The Minister of Development and Investments, Adonis Georgiadis, speaking on the draft law, asked “to stop the populism of the opposition, that accuracy is the result of profiteering” He said that when comparisons are made in the price index, they should be made either with the average of eurozone or even the EU where we have similar markets and not with the global list where underdeveloped countries’ economies are included.

Greece, he said, has 15.6% inflation when average prices in the EU are at 18.2% and the Eurozone at 16.3%. That is, we are more than three points below the EU average and one point below the eurozone average.

He rejected as “false” the claim that precision comes from profiteering, arguing that the precision that does exist comes from the fact that we have connected economies and the fact that what we consume is mostly imported either because of energy or raw materials and we do not have purely 100% Greek products. Therefore, he added, it is impossible not to have imported inflation.

He explained that if our problem was profiteering we would have imported inflation in the prices, ie 16.3% plus the profiteering you say. But we are two units below the EU inflation we import. What you’re claiming, he said, “is space math” and “it’s absolutely obvious that you’re lying for political reasons.” Your populism, however, “takes place because you are politically exploiting a real fact which is not the profiteering, but the accuracy that exists because we are running the biggest inflationary cycle in the EU since the Second World War and after that, the prices of the products is growing across Europe.”

Regarding the Household Basket, the minister emphasized that it has been successful and the fact that 50% compared to 48% who consider its existence as positive and that 64% of citizens state that they buy products from the Basket, these do not show that consumers have turned their backs on it. He said that when the Basket started, its average value was 117 euros today after 15 weeks the total value has fallen according to the supermarket chain to 90 euros on average. That is, not only has it not taken inflation, but it has subtracted. The minister said that the Basket will not extinguish inflation, because it is not Jesus Christ but for our poor fellow citizen it is an opportunity to save money. He informed that a third country mission is coming to the Ministry of Development to understand and copy not only the Basket but also the law against profiteering with the price ceiling.

He pointed out that during 5 years of the SYRIZA government, zero fines were imposed for ill-gotten gains because there was no control mechanism, while the ND government established the DYMEA, staffed and manned it, and about 5,000 on-site checks have been made, in addition to those that are made daily through electronic surveillance by the ADAE system and are the trigger for on-site checks in stores. At the same time, he noted that the smuggling of monkey products from the center of the cities has also disappeared.

Mr. Georgiadis stated that there is indeed accuracy in the market, but this does not mean that checks are not made. We need to think and find other things to do, but we do our work with faith, responsibility, with hard work and it has results.
