The actress protagonist of “Emily in Paris” (Netflix), Lily Collins, 33, said that she is another famous person who has lived in an abusive relationship. She said that the situation occurred with an ex-boyfriend from 10 years ago and that, even today, she still has moments when she is triggered.
“For me, my toxic romantic relationship was verbal and emotional abuse that made me feel very small,” she says. “That panic is what can still trigger me,” she explained. Currently married to filmmaker Charlie McDowell, Lily said that even though the exchange between the two is healthy, there are times when she is transported to the past.
“It’s like a millisecond, or less than a millisecond, and your gut reacts, your heart starts pounding, and all of a sudden you’re taken back to that moment when you were told that 10 years ago, but you’re not in that situation. now and that’s the trigger — and it’s really hard. It’s awful.”
She explains, in an interview with the newspaper Page Six, that the way her ex-boyfriend found to be aggressive was through derogatory speeches. “He called me ‘Little Lily’ and said horrible things about me in terms of what I was wearing, called me a whore and all that stuff.”
As a result, Collins admits he’s had to deal with feelings like anxiety and panic. “I was pretty quiet and comfortable in silence and feeling like I had to make myself small to feel super safe,” she says.
