“Greece, with all the possibilities it has, will continue to help the victims of the devastating earthquakes, both in Turkey and in Syria”, underlined the Minister of Foreign Affairs Nikos Dendias in his statement after the end of his meeting with the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Argentina , Santiago Andrés Cafiero in Buenos Aires.

“My country is a country of principles and its principles dictate that we always stand by the societies that are being tested and try, as much as we can, to alleviate human suffering.”

Referring to the meeting with his counterpart, he said “I am particularly pleased with the results of the first visit of a Greek foreign minister to Argentina and I would like to express my gratitude to my colleague, but also to the President of Argentina, who did me the great honor to discussed at length with me about Greek-Argentine, but also about Argentinian-European relations”.

As he pointed out, during the meeting they had an extensive exchange of views, on the political level, on the economic level, but also on the level of relations between Argentina and the European Union, especially on the issue of signing the EU-Mercosur agreement.

“I had the opportunity to express to Argentina and to my colleague the gratitude of Greece for the support that Argentina provides us both in our campaign to be elected a member of the United Nations Security Council, and for today’s statement that Argentina will support us in our effort to be elected a member of the Human Rights Council”, added Mr. Dendias and added: “We consider that Argentina is a natural interlocutor and partner in Latin America, both for Greece and the EU. It is a country that which believes in International Law and has co-signed the International Convention on the Law of the Sea”.

After all, as he reminded, there is an important Greek community in Argentina, “which is a natural bridge between the two countries. We may be separated by geographical distance, but there is a huge cultural proximity between Europe and Argentina.”
