He emphasized that Europe can neither remain idle in the face of competition from the USA, nor can it support only the interests of the large member states.
The President of SYRIZA – Progressive Alliance, Alexis Tsipras, during his intervention at the European Socialist Summit, referred to the extremely serious and interconnected crises that, as he emphasized, we must face together. The precision crisis, the energy and climate crisis, as well as the challenges in the refugee field.
He emphasized that Europe can neither remain idle in the face of competition from the USA, nor can it support only the interests of the large member states.
Because if each Member State is left to boost its industrial production and economic development based on its capabilities, the goal of convergence will be lost forever.
He emphasized that beyond the relaxation of restrictions on state aid and the reallocation of the Recovery Fund funds, we must move in three directions.
Firstlyjoint issuance of debt as suggested by Mr Gentiloni (and already done with the Recovery Fund) and management of these funds by the European Investment Bank.
Secondly, state aid should be given in the form of guarantees in order not to be counted in the public debt and to have a maximum permitted limit of state aid in terms of the GDP of each member state, which will be set centrally by the EU. depending on the actual needs of the countries.
Thirdlyto have a radical revision of the Stability Pact so that it really supports economic growth and convergence, with the adoption of a golden rule of no measurement in the annual deficit calculation, public investment in climate change, health and other sectors and an automatic fiscal stabilizer to be activated in crises .
Regarding the developments in Greece, he emphasized that the collapse of the rule of law is not a Greek issue, but a European one. He informed about the latest revelations of the independent Communications Privacy Authority and asked for the support of the Eurosocialists so that the Mitsotakis regime is revealed in all its aspects in the European institutions.
Regarding refugees/immigrants, the President of SYRIZA-PS emphasized that Europe is too late and we cannot discuss only when some Western countries are worried about secondary flows.
It is not possible to have properly welcomed 4 million Ukrainians to Europe in less than a year and at the same time not vigorously promote an agreement on an annual number of legal and safe reception and resettlement in Europe of refugees and migrants from Turkey and the Nordic countries Africa. It is not possible that we cannot agree on a fair Migration and Asylum Deal.
An agreement in this direction must be paid immediately and certainly before the summer, as well as a new Euro-Turkish agreement to deal with traffickers and accept returns.
“The Mitsotakis regime is a central issue in the EU for the erosion of the Rule of Law”
Earlier, attending the PES preparatory meeting, Mr. Tsipras made the following statement to the press representatives:
“Right now our thoughts are on the humanitarian tragedy in Turkey and Syria. The European Union must take the lead in sending humanitarian aid. This is not the time to keep in mind the sanctions on Syria that do not allow aid to be sent there. The EU must take the lead in a humanitarian and aid effort, this is the first priority.
In our country now, Greece is unfortunately a central topic of discussion in the European institutions. The Mitsotakis regime is a central topic of discussion. Next week, the European Parliament in its plenary session will discuss the erosion of the rule of law in Greece by the surveillance and manipulation of the media. It is obvious that those who hypocritically told us that they want us to stay in the EU, have distanced us from Europe and the European acquis.
With regard to the economic issues that the European Council will discuss, a very critical discussion is the one that concerns the strengthening of European industry. This aid, however, must be done proportionally by all member states and not by those who have the ability. Otherwise, we will soon not have a European Union but a Franco-German Union with many satellites.
More solidarity is needed. State aid is required to be given in the form of guarantees so that they are not registered in debt. The funds should be managed by the European Investment Bank and a radical revision of the Stability Pact is of course required.
More solidarity is also needed in immigration, with a fair European Pact on Asylum and Migration so that the countries of first reception do not take all the burden. It’s a common problem, let’s all manage it together.”
