“Here, in Western Macedonia, the heart of one of the country’s most dynamic universities beats,” said the prime minister

“Finally, Western Macedonia is getting the University it deserves,” the Prime Minister pointed out Kyriakos Mitsotakis during his greeting at the opening ceremony of the new Western Macedonia campus, in the Active Urbanization Zone (ZEP), of Kozani.

“Here, in Western Macedonia, the heart of one of the country’s most dynamic universities beats”, said Mr. Mitsotakis and characterized today as a great day not only for Western Macedonia but for the educational community as a whole.

To show the role played by the University of Western Macedonia, the prime minister emphasized that it is one of the five pillars of the Just Transition program in the region. It spans five cities and, he said, all five must be supported.

As soon as he arrived at the Campus he was greeted the Minister of Education Niki Kerameos and the rector of the University of Western Macedonia, Theodoros Theodoulidis.

“The buildings I see do not refer to Greek universities and that makes us particularly happy”, were the prime minister’s first words, while he told a group of students who were waiting for him that there are not many such buildings in Universities in Greece.

In her greeting, Mrs. Kerameos emphasized that the new University of Western Macedonia “is a real academic jewel not only for Greek but for European standards”.

He said that the University of Western Macedonia is in full development and is also a model in terms of the use of renewable energy sources (heated with a district heating system).

For the University in question, he said that this year the budget for student allowances was doubled. Last year the amount of 2.1 million euros was given and this year the amount of 4.2 million euros.

“We won one of the bets we had placed for the next day, the new state-of-the-art University Campus is a pole of attraction for new people and development,” emphasized the regional governor of Western Macedonia, Giorgos Kasapidis.

Rector Theodoros Theodoulidis noted that “the University of Western Macedonia is on a dynamic trajectory of growth and extroversion” and in the last three years its educational footprint has exploded.

Until now its cost of the new University campus amounted to 25,000,000 euros and houses the administrative services and three of the five Departments of the Polytechnic School.

The development program provides for the construction of buildings to house the other two Departments of the Polytechnic School. Funding has been secured for the construction of student residences with a capacity of 350 beds, a restaurant with a capacity of 750 fed students and a conference center with a main auditorium for 700 delegates and a secondary auditorium for 250 delegates.

The goal is for the University of Western Macedonia to evolve into a green, energy autonomous University with a zero energy footprint.

In total, the interventions will reach 75 million euros.
