Libya’s claims as set out in a letter from its Permanent Mission Libya to secretary general of the UNregarding a decree of the President of Egypt on the definition of maritime zones, the Greek side rejects.

According diplomatic sourcesin fact, the Permanent Representative of Greece to the UN already sent a letter to the Secretary General of the UN on 24.04.2023 which refers to a letter from the Permanent Representation of Libya to the UN to the same addressee (13.02.2023) regarding a decree of its President of Egypt for the determination of Egypt’s maritime zones.
In the said letter from the Libyan MA to the UN, coordinates and a map of Libya’s eastern maritime borders are listed, according to the Tripoli government’s view of things.
With the letter of the MA of Greece, our country rejects Libyan claims regarding Libya’s eastern maritime borders, to the extent that they affect Greek sovereign rights. In particular, the part of the eastern sea border presented by the Tripoli government in the letter in question violates the EEZ of Greece in accordance with the bilateral agreement between Greece and Egypt on the delimitation of the EEZs of the two countries which was concluded on the basis of international law (signed on 06.08.2020).
It should be noted that part of the eastern sea border claimed by the Tripoli government is based on a demarcation of the Turkish-Libyan memorandum of 2019 (not ratified by the Libyan House of Representatives), which is invalid and cannot produce any legal effects since it violates flagrantly fundamental rules of the Law of the Sea, such as the right of islands to have maritime zones, and does not take into account the sovereign rights of Greece.
These Libyan claims in flagrant violation of international law also pose a threat to peace and stability in the Mediterranean Sea.
It is noted that in the letter of the Ministry of Defense of Greece to the UN, the commitment of our country to resolve any maritime zone demarcation dispute with neighboring countries by peaceful means, in good faith and in accordance with the international law of the sea, as it has already done with Italy and Egypt.
