Kyriakos Mitsotakis returned by phone the mandate to form a government to the President of the Republic Katerina Sakellaropoulou, officially paving the way for new elections – most likely – on June 25.

With an announcement by Greek Presidency states:

“The President of the New Republic Kyriakos Mitsotakis contacted the President of the Republic Katerina Sakellaropoulou and informed her that he is submitting the exploratory order he received for the formation of a government.

Following this, the President of the Republic will receive tomorrow, May 23 at 11:00, the President of SYRIZA – Progressive Alliance, Alexis Tsipras, in order to assign him the second exploratory mandate, in accordance with the provisions of article 37 par. 2 of the Constitution” .

Earlier, the prime minister and president of New Democracy Kyriakos Mitsotakis contacted by phonein the framework of investigative order which he received by the President of the Republic Katerina Sakellaropoulouwith the President of SYRIZA Alexis Tsiprasthe President of PASOK Nikos Androulakisthe General Secretary of the KKE Dimitris Koutsouba and the President of the Hellenic Solution Kyriakos Velopoulos.

Mr. Mitsotakis repeated that he believes that there is no condition for the formation of a government by the present Parliament and that he intends to return the investigative order this afternoon.

The Prime Minister conveyed to political leaders that the government will propose speeding up the convening and dissolution of the new Parliament so that parliamentary elections on June 25.

Parliament is expected to be sworn in on Sunday, May 28 and dissolved on Monday, May 29.
