The President of the Court of Auditors assumes the duties of a new, interim prime minister, Yannis Sharmas.

He will be received by the President of the Republic, Katerina Sakellaropoulou, at 13:00 at the Presidential Palace where she will assign him, in accordance with article 37 par. 3 sub. 3 of the Constitution, the formation of a government, as widely accepted as possible, to hold elections.

On November 4, 2019, Yiannis Sarmas was appointed President of the Court of Auditors with a four-year non-renewable term, as defined in the Constitution.

Born in 1957, he studied law in Athens (1975-1979) and Paris (1980-1984).

He served as a reserve officer in the Air Force (1984-1986). Judicial officer since January 1987, initially at the Council of State (1987-1993) and then, with a transfer, at the Court of Auditors (1993 to date). He was a member and chairman of the Department at the European Court of Auditors for 12 years (2002-2013).

Returning to Athens (2014), he directed the work of the III Section of the Court as Vice-President of the Court of Auditors (2014-2019). Honorary doctor of the Department of Public Administration of the School of Economics and Public Administration of Panteion University (November 2022). Honorary Doctorate of the School of Law of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki (May 2022).
