Positively treats the lifting of the immunity of the SYRIZA-PS MEP, Alexis Georgoulis, his lawyer, Matina Malla, pointing out that he is now being summoned by the authorities, in order to testify and be informed about the content of the complaint against him.

The next step in the case is for the plenary session of the European Parliament to decide on the lifting of immunity, at the meeting that will probably take place on June 1st.

Ms. Malla’s statement in detail

“In some of today’s publications regarding the issue of lifting the immunity of Mr. Georgoulis, the following – we consider important – points have been omitted.

“The process was completed in the shortest possible time due to the repeated and persistent requests of Mr. Georgoulis to the Legal Affairs Committee of the European Parliament for the fastest possible lifting of his immunity.

“Today, the Commission approved the removal and therefore the issue will be put to a secret vote by all MEPs in the next plenary session. This means that the process will probably be completed on June 1st. This shortening of the proceedings is due to Mr. Georgoulis waiving the right to be heard, which would hinder and slow down the proceedings.

“For exactly the same reason, he did not appear today during the procedure.

“He himself had proposed to the competent judicial authorities that he appear and provide explanations, but this was not possible, due to the fact that the procedure for lifting his immunity had not been completed.

“Today’s development is very positive, as after this we expect the same person to be called by the authorities, in order for him to testify and be informed about the content of the complaint and the matters included in the case file”.
