The President of the New Republic Kyriakos Mitsotakis visited the village on Wednesday afternoon Therisos of Chania, where he had the opportunity to visit the Headquarters of the Revolution of 1905 and was guided by the President of the “Eleftherios Venizelos” Foundation, Nikos Papadakis.

Afterwards, Kyriakos Mitsotakis spoke to citizens who had gathered to welcome him.

Kyriakos Mitsotakis even started his speech with a chant: “I came to worship in a place of revolution, to promise you that I will not back down in difficult times”.

“For me it is a special moment today to be here in Therisos, in this historic place, which is so identified with the struggles of the greatest politician of modern Greek history, Eleftherios Venizelos, who in 1905 arrived in this village leader of a revolution which left an indelible mark on the history of Crete, but also on the history of Greece” said Kyriakos Mitsotakis and added:

“It is indeed every visit to Therisos an opportunity to reflect on the work of this great Cretan politician, the way he bridged his revolutionary instincts with his pragmatism and above all his ability to be able to always see further, to plan the long-term future of our country, when his opponents were consumed in small tactical battles.

Eleftherios Venizelos is for all of us a historical example, a leader who deserves to be studied, especially by the younger generation. And of course for all of us – and especially for me – a point of reference, as in addition to being a prominent historical figure, he was a relative of mine. The old Kostis Mitsotakis was his mentor in politics, the one who introduced him to politics.

And, of course, in the museum of Therissos I had the great pleasure of seeing a photograph of my grandfather, Kyriakos Mitsotakis, who was also here in Therissos, shortly before he led a corps of Cretan volunteers to fight in the Macedonian Wars, to be in Bizani, in Epirus. The ties between Crete and Macedonia are very strong.

So this visit of mine has a special, a special significance, especially as we are a few weeks before crucial elections. We don’t need to say much politically today, except to remind everyone how much the next election matters to have a strong and stable government» he stated.

“On the 21st of May you gave us a great and powerful command. We will go together to reaffirm it at the ballot box on June 25, for a strong New Democracy, a government which it will guarantee both the stability and the advance of the place.

I wish and hope that I will be able to visit Therisos again, which I love so much, here at the foot of Madara again as elected Prime Minister, so that together we can continue the important work that we have started” concluded.

.Kyriakos Mitsotakis closed his visit with one more mandinada: “Greet those on foot when you ride, so that they may greet you when you dismount.”

“I think it’s very timely, especially about how we should conduct ourselves as winners of elections, with modesty always,” noted the President of New Democracy.
