The completion of the process of lifting his immunity is described as “positive” by the MEP’s lawyer
The vote for waiver of immunity of MEP Alexis Georgoulis is expected to be held today, June 1, at the Plenary Session of the European Parliament in Brussels, at the request of the Belgian authorities for the complaint of rape that has been made against him three years ago.
It is recalled that the request of the Belgian authorities was announced by the President of the European Parliament, Roberta Metsola, on April 17 and on May 30, the Committee on Legal Affairs of the European Parliament voted unanimously in favor of lifting the immunity of Mr. Georgoulis.
The advocate of the MEP, Mr. Stamatia Malla, in a statement on Wednesday states the following:
“The legal affairs committee of the European Parliament, taking into account that Mr. Georgoulis waived his right to be heard in order to speed up the process of lifting his immunity, as well as his position, who has repeatedly stated that he wishes to lift his parliamentary immunity, forwarded its approving decision to the president of the European Parliament, in order for it to be voted on in the Plenary. It should be noted that the Parliament can reasonably take into account the MEP’s position in order to decide whether or not to lift his immunity and thus Mr. Georgoulis’ position in favor of lifting it plays a catalytic role for the faster progress of the process.”
Mrs. Stamatia Malla also mentioned that Mr. Georgoulis had suggested to the competent Belgian judicial authorities to appear and provide explanations, but this was not possible due to the fact that the procedure for lifting his immunity had not been completed. The completion of the process of lifting his immunity in the shortest possible time is described as “positive” by his lawyer, as after this Mr. Georgoulis is expected to be summoned by the authorities “in order to testify and be informed about the content of the complaint and the contents of the file”.
