“I sincerely believe that through the strengthening of SYRIZA, the common cause remains alive, in conditions of suffocating omnipotence of the New Democracy” writes Gavriil Sakellaridis.
Gavriel Sakellaridis expresses his support for SYRIZA in a post on Facebook ahead of the June 25 elections, and emphasizes that he is not seeking any role in the party.
Mr. Sakellaridis announces that he will vote for SYRIZA in Sunday’s polls – calling on him at the same time to draw – at his most critical turning point, as he emphasizes – the necessary conclusions about how things developed this way and how they can develop differently. “Something he hasn’t done so far with the necessary boldness.”
The post Sakellaridis
“The elections of May 21 marked a deep change, unfortunately not the one that the Left preached. A deep dominance of the New Democracy, both at the level of the political program and at the level of ideas within society. These elections simply certified this dominance, which was built day by day during the previous four years. Or rather to be more precise, this dominance was systematically built up from the years of SYRIZA’s rule.
The June 25 election will inevitably be held under the heavy shadow of the previous election result. As shown by the polls, but also by elementary logic, the correlations will hardly change. New Democracy will ensure a comfortable self-reliance, capable of making it omnipotent in the next four years. Given the authoritarian way he governed in the previous period, there should be no illusions about what will follow, how he will proceed and how he will exercise the governmental prerogative.
But the June 25 election is not a futile struggle, it is not a battle without stakes. Perhaps those battles that seem to lack immediate and visible stakes are the most critical and the most useful. Searching the dark corners of the labyrinth to find the edge of the myth that will enable the rebuilding of a strong, competitive political force that can potentially be a vehicle for a governmental alternative is critical for both democracy and the Left.
If this end of the thread is lost in the four years that dawns from June 26, things can only get worse for society and for any vision of social justice, of any variety.
And no, I don’t believe that nothing should be left standing from the collective experience of the last – at least – 15 years. As much ground is lost, it will hardly be regained without a critical political mass. Without a political subject present today and tomorrow for the next four years which I believe will have certain gloomy characteristics.
I feel the need to say that I will vote and support SYRIZA in Sunday’s elections.
As I have not felt it in the last 8 years that I have moved away and am not even a member of the party, that I have felt discomfort about political choices that related to the period of the government but also of the opposition, that I have deep objections to how this party evolved into something which personally did not motivate me”.
No, SYRIZA has not changed and suddenly it mobilizes me. Nor is it an emotional outburst about the cycle that closes and opens in 2012. It is reading the juncture that took shape so deafeningly on May 21st that – on a completely personal and subjective level – makes me want to share this choice of mine.
I’m not looking for any role, as I consciously haven’t done for years, nor did I see intra-party snobbery and show up. I really care about the common cause of the Left, which escapes narrow party lines and becomes a social stake.
I sincerely believe that through the strengthening of SYRIZA, this common goal remains alive, in conditions of suffocating omnipotence of the New Democracy. But this is only the sufficient condition. It remains to be seen what is necessary, which is another additional stake: For SYRIZA – at its most critical turning point – to draw the necessary conclusions about how things developed this way and how they can develop differently. Something he hasn’t done so far with the necessary courage.”
