A historic page was closed for SYRIZA after the announcement of the resignation of Alexis Tsipras from the presidency of the party. When the president informed his close associates on Thursday morning that he would make statements at Zappeion, everything “froze” in Koumoundourou.

No one knew what would follow the Executive Bureau meeting. During the three days that he chose to stay alone with his family in his summer house in Sounio, the former president of SYRIZA “weighed” the developments and decided to change his decisions in order to decongest the situation and for the developments to run smoothly.

The mood in the party after the second defeat was not good at all. The “Presidents” kept talking about quick procedures ahead of the regional and municipal elections on October 8 and 15.

The internal party opposition reacted by wanting the Congress and the re-election of Alexis Tsipras to take place in November or at the end of the year in order to have a discussion of “substance”. This was followed by Dimitris Vitsa’s proposal for a diarchy, but also the intense fight between Dimitris Tzanakopoulos and Panos Rigas that weighed down the atmosphere.

In the Executive Office that preceded the resignation none of this was discussed. No political talk took place as members of the body tried to figure out exactly what was going on.

The meeting was attended by Euclid Tsakalotos, Olga Gerovasili, Efi Ahtsioglou, Alexis Haritsis, Andreas Xanthos, Panos Skourletis, Nasos Iliopoulos, Marilisa Xenogiannakopoulou, Rania Svigou and George Vasiliadis. The atmosphere was particularly emotional with the executives reminiscing about their moments from their journey in SYRIZA.

At the beginning of the discussion, Alexis Tsipras reportedly said: “Some decisions you make with your pillow. It is not for consultation. My departure from the presidency is an irrevocable decision”, said the president when he was together with his colleagues. Several asked him why he chose not to contact anyone in recent days.

According to other sources, the former head of Koumoundourou replied: “I thought about it for three days. I measured what is in the interest of the party, the Left and in what way the developments can be facilitated”, he answered them. Only two members, according to “K” information, conveyed to him in mild tones their disagreement with his decision.

The next day and the possible “dolphins”

The next day’s moves have not been decided. Party and parliamentary group are two separate cases that must continue to function adequately without any gap. The information states that on Saturday the Political Secretariat will meet in order to outline the course of the Congress, as well as the election of the president. The majority wants everything to run quickly so that SYRIZA does not remain “headless” for a long time. It is recalled that according to the new statute, the president of SYRIZA is elected by the members of the party, as is the Central Committee.

On Monday after the swearing in of the deputies, the Parliamentary group in order to select the new interim head.

The dominant person is considered to be Olga Gerovasili due to her experience, but also her position as secretary of K.O for the previous four years.
