Why does Alexis Tsipras want an election from the grassroots – Is SYRIZA “hard rock”?

by

Alexis Tsipras is attempting a total “facelift” in the structures and procedures in SYRIZA with the proposal – surprise that he submitted yesterday to the Political Council of the party.

The main axis of his proposal is that the president and the Central Committee of the party are no longer elected by the congress but by the so-called “base”, the members of SYRIZA.

Alexis Tsipras surprised the Political Council as his proposal is a “red cloth” for the Left Wing of SYRIZA, a fact that could lead to “hard rock” situations within the official opposition.

Sources in the “presidency” argue that with these changes the party will become more attractive and will register more members.

The other side, which also voted in the minority, opposes that there will be no more accountability and that the Central Committee of the party will be elected according to “star system” criteria.

Tsipras’ proposal was put to a vote requested by Nikos Voutsis. 27 members were in favor of the changes proposed by the president of SYRIZA and 11 were against.

In addition to the changes in the way of electing the chairman and the Central Committee, Mr. Tsipras proposed a quota of men – women 50-50 in the bodies, a maximum of 3 consecutive parliamentary terms and the establishment of an ethics committee that with a 2/3 majority will open the door to deletions more easily. .
