“We will start providing consular services in the northern part of the city of Nicosia in the near future. We will work on a regular basis,” a Russian source said
The Russian embassy in Cyprus will soon provide consular services in the Occupied Territories, TASS news agency reported on Wednesday, citing a diplomatic source.
“We will start providing consular services in the northern part of the city of Nicosia in the near future. We will work on a regular basis,” the Russian diplomatic source said.
According to the Russian diplomat who spoke to TASS, the decision has to do with “by fulfilling obligations of the Russian government to its citizens residing in the northern part of Cyprus”. The Russian side claims that “several countries, including the US, the UK, Germany, Italy and France, have diplomatic missions dealing with consular issues that have been operating in northern Cyprus for many years.”
The decision to provide consular services “does not have political overtones and is dictated by concern for our compatriots there,” said the Russian ambassador to Cyprus, Murat Zyazikov.
More than 50,000 Russian citizens it is estimated that they live today in the Occupied Territories.
