Peace reigns today in Pylaaccording to the Spokesman of the UN Peacekeeping Force, Aleem Siddiquewho told KYPE that the Force is closely monitoring the situation and is on alert to prevent the recurrence of arbitrary operations in the area by Turkish Cypriots.
Asked by the CYPE to comment that work would resume today Monday, Mr. Siddique said “yes, rumors are circulating. We are in the area, monitoring the situation, and there has been no repetition of the work.” He added that “we will take action to stop any recurrence”.
He said that today is quiet, and “there is no change from yesterday, not even construction machinery or personnel inside the dead zone anymore.”
“We are closely monitoring the situation and maintaining a presence in the area and we are on alert to prevent any resumption of arbitrary operations in this area,” he added.
According to the official, the developments are being transferred to New York where the Security Council will be informed in the afternoon.
However, Ankara is also asking for change after Turkish Cypriot forces attack UN members in Pyla’s dead zone. The Turkish Ministry of Foreign Affairs attacked the UN in a statement on Saturday.
In a statement by the Turkish Foreign Minister, Turkey claims that “the UN is not fulfilling its basic tasks and functions, such as equal treatment of both sides on the island and finding solutions to the differences”.
