This is one of the biggest disasters in all of Europe since 2000, when the recording of fires with the Copernicus system began,” noted Mr. Androulakis.
Meeting with competent bodies for the adaptation of civil protection plans in the new data of climate change, the strengthening of prevention and forest protection took place the president of PASOK, Nikos Androulakisin view of tomorrow’s debate at the level of political leaders in the Parliament.
“To date, 1,600,000 acres of land have been burned. Unfortunately, in many parts of Greece the damages are universal. And I want to underline that the government has failed miserably to protect the biodiversity jewel of the country, which was the Dadia forest. Even today, the twelfth day, the fire burns. 800,000 acres have burned. One of the biggest disasters in all of Europe since 2000, when the recording of fires with the Copernicus system began,” noted Mr. Androulakis, opening the meeting.
“I visited Komotini and Evros. The destruction is too great. The citizens are in despair and we must all rise to the occasion, without populism and wishful thinking. Climate change is here. The big challenges are here and a national response plan is needed with prevention as a priority. Personally, I have dealt a lot with the issues of European civil protection. We have waged a great struggle so that Europe acquires through joint orders air means to face these escalating challenges, which are created especially in the Mediterranean basin. But, no matter how many air and ground means the country takes – like other European countries – if the priority is not the strengthening of Civil Protection plans and prevention, unfortunately things will go from bad to worse” concluded Mr. Androulakis.
